 Lead -- Usually one sentence that tells who, what where, when, why and how. It is found at the beginning of the story  Let's look at some examplesLet's look at some examples

 Title of the story  A good newspaper headline is concise, informative and, at times, entertaining. When you write a newspaper headline, your goal is to hook the reader into reading the articleentertaining  Let's check out today's paper Let's check out today's paper

 Author of text

 Exactly what someone said, and is in quotation marks.

 A story that is timely and describes an event of interest  Hard news stories move briskly through the five W's and the H, packing in just enough detail to give readers a clear picture of the news. Immediacy is everything in hard news.

 A human interest story that is not closely tied to a recent news event.  Bare facts are surrounded by elaboration, interpretation, mood, context, detailed description, emotion, irony and humor.

 Once you have a story idea, decide exactly what focus you want to emphasize. Your focus is the angle you want for the story.

 A writer tells his or her opinion about a subject.

 Always ask open-ended questions  If your question solicits a yes or no answer, it is not open-ended  Always ask ‘why’  Develop questions before the interview  Be ready to ask new questions depending on the answers you get

 In a news story, the most important information goes at the top, leaving less important details for last. Lead Details pertaining to lead Minor details
