Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) DANB is the nationally recognized premier certification and credentialing agency for dental assistants. Since 1948, the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB), a nonprofit organization, has played a vital role in the oral healthcare community. Recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) as the national credentialing agency for dental assistants, DANB serves the public good by providing a means of identifying qualified and competent dental assistants and by measuring and promoting excellence in oral healthcare delivery. DANB exam programs are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Hudson Valley Community College DANB Code = Office of the Professions (OP) This educational agent regulates DA programs in the State of New York and must follow the OP regulations. The Dental Assisting Program at Hudson Valley Community College satisfies all educational requirements for Certification and Licensure in NYS-in accordance with Section 6608 of the New York State Education Law. American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) "To advance the careers of dental assistants and to promote the dental assisting profession in matters of education, legislation, credentialing and professional activities which enhance the delivery of quality dental health care to the public.“

The protected title for a New York State licensed certified dental assistant is "certified dental assistant" as stated in section 6608-a of New York State Education Law. However, the New York State Board for Dentistry recognizes that New York State licensed certified dental assistants may use the letters RDA following their names to identify that they are licensed and registered to practice as dental assistants in the State of New York, if they so desire. The State Education Department, under Regents' direction, administers professional regulation through its Office of the Professions, assisted by the State Boards for the Professions.

Note: A New York State licensed "certified dental assistant" may or may not be a DANB CDA. Only those who pass DANB's CDA exam and maintain the certification are eligible to use the "CDA" designation. The NYSDB recognizes that state licensed “certified dental assistants” may use “RDA” after their names to identify that they are licensed and registered to practice as a dental assistant in the state of New York, if they so desire.

License, RDA- certified dental assistant, in order to provide the supportive dental services authorized by the N.Y.S. Dental Assisting Law.

*Dental assistants must complete a licensure-qualifying program in dental assisting or an equivalent program as determined by the State Education Department. Note: At this time a dental assisting school overseen by the Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) do not qualify as a licensure-qualifying program leading to licensure. NOTE: Even if you fulfill the examination requirement, you will not be licensed until the department approves your education. Both the education and examination requirements must be fulfilled. ________________________________________________________ The Education Law makes it a Class E felony for an unlicensed person (other than a student in a registered dental assisting program), to do so. A Class E felony may be punishable by a fine of up to double the gain from the crime or $5,000, whichever is higher and/or up to four years in prison. __________________________________________________________

What functions may a New York State licensed certified dental assistant perform? Answer: A New York State licensed certified dental assistant may -provide patient education -take preliminary medical histories and vital signs to be reviewed by the dentist -place and remove rubber dams -select and prefit provisional crowns -select and prefit orthodontic bands -remove orthodontic arch wires and ligature ties -place and remove matrix bands -take impressions for study casts or diagnostic casts -remove periodontal dressings -remove sutures placed by a licensed dentist -take impressions for space maintainers, orthodontic appliances, and occlusal guards -remove temporary cement -apply topical anticariogenic agents to the teeth -apply desensitizing agents to the teeth -place and remove temporary separating devices -place orthodontic ligatures -take dental x-rays in accordance with Public Health Law -perform such other dental supportive services authorized by the dentist & consistent with NYS laws, rules & regulations All supportive services must be performed under a licensed dentist's direct personal supervision.

What other tasks may an unlicensed dental assistant perform in the dental office? Answer: An unlicensed dental assistant may perform such tasks as: -preparing the patient for treatment by seating patient, obtaining records and applying protective garb; -preparing instruments, materials and medicaments to be used; -taking dental x-rays in accordance with Public Health Law (see question 18);question 18 -decontaminating, scrubbing, packaging and sterilizing all instruments; -performing solely mechanical work upon inert matter in a dental office, e.g. trimming or mounting impressions taken by the dentist. All supportive services must be performed under a licensed dentist's direct personal supervision.

FAQ ………….by Dentist & Dental Assistants: Q: My DA passed all three DANB exams (ICE,RHS,GC) so my assistant is a Certified Dental Assistant and is legal in NYS; right? A: Unfortunately she is not authorized to perform duties as RDA in NYS, doing so is committing a class E felony due to the lack of formal education required. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Q: Can I use the credentialing RDA if I am also a CDA® ? A: Yes you may use both; but only if you have the formal educational required, and completed the Office of the Professions Form #2. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Q: What is the difference between RDA and CDA? A: RDA is a Register Dental Assistant in NYS that has complete the DANB: RHS, ICE and NYPDAE along with the required education. The CDA is a registered trademark by DANB (CDA®) and is not the same as the “certified dental assist “as the language read on the NYS law.

Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Administers the State-Specific Exam for New York State Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) Licensure. The following information does not lead to the national DANB Certi­fied Dental Assistant (CDA®) but rather to become a New York State Registered/Licensed Dental Assistant RDA.

You may apply for licensure from the NYSED after completing all of the below requirements. □ Be at least 17 years of age □ Candidate must be a high school graduate or its equivalent Successfully complete one of these two education options: □ (a) a New York Board-approved one-year course of study in dental assisting consisting of 24 semester hours, in a degree-granting institution or a Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) program that includes at least 200 hours of clinical experience such as the Hudson Valley Community College Certified Dental Assisting Program (DAC)* OR □ (b) an alternate course of study in dental assisting acceptable to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that includes at least 1,000 hours of relevant work experience in accordance with the Commissioner’s regulations such as the Hudson Valley Community College Alternative Dental Assisting Program (ADAP)* *New York State Education Department Office of Profession (OP) Form #2 (Certification of Professional Education) will be submitted directly by the educational institution (such as Hudson Valley Community College).
