The First Shelters  Before people built houses they lived in trees, then in caves.  In time men learned to make simple tools, first out of stone, then much later metal.  They also learned to form clay blocks, which were dried in the sun.

Middle Age Houses.  They began to use heavy timber for frameworks, filling the gaps with clay.  They used thick stone walls, sometimes with water filled moats and drawbridges. (With buildings inside the walls)  In the 1400’s, Europeans built half timbered houses with stone or brick foundations.  To build walls, they used thin wooden strips, plastured with a mixture of clay and straw.

Ancient Egyptian and Greek Houses.  The ancient Egyptians began building their flat- topped house out of sun dried bricks around 3100 BC.  The ancient Greeks lived in well made stone houses with slanted roofs. 

Industrial Revolution Era. (The 18 th Century) Many tools were invented during the 18 th century, including: -the saw (1780) Steel was often used to manufacture tools, and brick production increased as well.

Industrial Revolution Era. (The 19 th Century) Steel and glass panes were mass produced. New construction devices and tools included: -Steam engines -Machine tools -Explosives -Hammer (1894) -Measuring tape (1868)

Tools in the 20 th Century  Many tools were invented in the 20 th century:  -nail gun (1950)  -maul (1980)  -staple gun (1949)  -glue gun (1940)  -electric drill (1972)

Modern Houses.  Pretty much all modern homes include bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and bathrooms. (Instead of public bathing places)  Many blueprints are now created using technology.
