CITI: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative

What is CITI? Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Web-based tutorial and testing site that is frequently updated to reflect changes in human subject law and regulation More robust and up-to-date than the current homegrown program Meets NIH and DHHS requirements for basic training for the use of human subjects and research and teaching Used by over 830 institutions around the world Allows investigators to take modules specific to their needs Biomedical Social/Behavioral Children Prisoners, etc.

Who is required to take CITI? All principal investigators Co-investigators Anyone involved in the design, conduct, or reporting of the research, or having significant interaction with subjects including personnel obtaining informed consent listed on the IRB application. This includes undergraduate and graduate students. IRB Members Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) staff

When do I need to complete CITI training? If you have previously passed the IU Human Subjects Protection Test: CITI training will be required at the time of continuing review for all continuing reviews due after October 1, CITI training will be required for New Study submissions submitted after October 1, 2010.

When do I need to complete CITI training? If you have not previously passed the IU Human Subjects Protection Test: CITI training is required as the IU Human Subjects Tutorial and Test are no longer available.

How long will it take to complete? Each module may take minutes to complete The number of modules required depends on the educational track and optional modules selected Two educational tracks Biomedical Social/Behavioral Examples of additional modules Prisoners Pregnant Women and Fetuses in Utero Children

How do I get started? The register for CITI training, please visit REEP: Educational Opportunities at Select “yes” and login to CAS with your IU Network ID and Password. Select “no” if you don’t have an IU Network ID. You will be directed to the main CITI site to create a CITI username and password. Then, you will need to select your IU campus as your institution.

Adding Modules at Initial Testing At initial testing, elective modules can be taken after the required modules are completed Complete the electives that apply

Adding Modules After Completion To add modules after you have finished your CITI course Go to Main Menu Select “Optional Modules”

After Completing CITI To view your completion history and obtain a certificate of completion, follow the link on the Main Menu to “Print” your Completion Report

After Completing CITI Print and retain a copy of your Completion Report for your records.

What if I have an IU username and have already completed CITI with another organization or institution? If you have completed CITI courses with another organization or institution, you will need to contact REEP to be able to receive credit for your CITI course as an IU

How to affiliate with IU for non-IU investigators who have taken CITI with another institution Log-in to CITI with original username and password Go to the “Main Menu” Click “Affiliate with another institution” Under drop-down for “Participating Institutions” Select Indiana University--East Complete “Member Information” Click “Submit” Select Curriculum Question #2 – Human Subjects Complete according to research Should now see Indiana University--East listed on the Main Menu page Under “Indiana University--East” look at “My Courses”, and “Status”. this will indicate whether or not there are additional modules to complete

Click “Affiliate with another institution”

Under “Participating Institutions”: Select IU-Indianapolis

Complete “Member Information” and Submit

Select “Human Subjects” and research role

Should now see IU-Indianapolis listed on the Main Menu page

Under “IU – Indianapolis”, “My Courses”, “Status” see what modules still need completed

On this screen, the investigator has completed Biomedical requirements, but needs to “Re-Enter” Social/Behavioral to complete modules.

Once all modules are complete, CITI requirements are met.

CITI Information The IRB co-chairs will have access to a database of your CITI completion information. The database includes First name Last name IU campus address Courses taken Course Grade book Date test was taken

CITI Information An overall average score of 80% is required to pass. The test modules may be taken as many times as needed. When you complete the test and do not pass, you can select “re-enter”. This will allow you to select and retake any of the individual modules.

CITI Information Completion of the CITI program will be required of investigators every three years. Following initial completion, “Refresher Courses” will be required Less modules CITI will automatically remind co-investigators to complete “Refresher Courses”
