Slum tourism in Kibera, Kenya: is it a good idea? Learning Goal: to identify what slum tourism is and describe its advantages and disadvantages in Kibera. Look back at the starter image, what could be the definition for the word ‘slum’? Think: what words would we use to describe this place? Slum: These are usually illegal settlements built on the outskirts of cities or in areas that would normally not be built on (e.g. river banks, steep slopes, near rubbish dumps). The homes are made from collected materials and rubbish and put together by the people who live in them.

Where is Kibera? Write a description of the location of Kibera. Things to include: Which part of Kenya it is in Which City it is part of Whereabouts in the city it is located Anything else it is near.

Task Read through the article on tourism in Kibera. Read through it again and this time highlight the key bits of information that suggest why people are attracted to the slum. In partners, read and answer one question at a time using evidence from the article to support it.
