Lead in and around the Home

Lead Poisoning zLead is dangerous because it is widely used and lasts forever in the environment. zYou can reduce exposure to lead, but you cannot avoid it. zLead poisoning is often considered as the number one environmental problem in the United States.

Children and Lead zChildren age 6 and younger are most likely to be affected because of hand-to- mouth activities. zLead-based paint is the most common source of high exposure in children. zOne in nine American children have elevated lead blood levels.

Health Problems from Lead zIn children: y Learning and behavioral problems y Slow mental development y Nervous system damage

Health Problems from Lead zIn adults: y High blood pressure y Reproductive system damage

Lead Sources zHouse paint from homes built before zHousehold dust created as paint ages or painted surfaces rub together. zChipping, peeling, or flaking paint. zLead pipes or solder. zLead-contaminated soils.

Lead in Your Water zPotential sources: yLead pipes that bring water into the home. yLead pipe connectors. yLead soldered joints in copper plumbing. yBrass faucets and pump components containing lead. zSoft or acidic water easily dissolves lead from pipes and fittings.

What can I do about lead in my water? zHave your water tested for lead. zFlush your plumbing system before use. zTest your water for pH and hardness. yOptimum pH level is 7.5 to 8.5. yOptimum hardness level is 80mg per liter. zMinimize effects by using cold tap water for cooking and drinking.

Lead Paint Dangers zPrior to 1978, paint with higher lead levels was used on the following if moisture exposure was great: ywindows ydoors yexterior walls zExposure is greatest when paint is chipping, flaking, or is scraped or sanded.

Lead in Soil zExhaust from vehicles using leaded gas has caused high lead levels in soil around homes in older neighborhoods. zThis lead is found in the top 2-3 inches and is a problem when: yChildren play outdoors on bare soil. ySoil is tracked into the house. yEating leafy vegetables grown in infected soil.

Protect Your Family From Lead zHave your children’s blood tested for lead. zHave your water tested for lead. zTake precautions when remodeling.

Protect Your Family From Lead z Clean around windows and doors often. z Encourage children to wash hands after playing. z Wash bottles, pacifiers and toys regularly.
