2 Overview When lead is consumed or breathed into the body it acts like poison. It travels throughout the body just like other minerals do. On its journey it damages everything it comes into contact with from blood cells to bones. Lead can be found it paint, toys, jewelry, contaminated soil, and other various household items. It is important to identify and remove these items to avoid lead poisoning before the damage is caused.

3 Signs and Symptoms Behavior problems including aggression, impulsivity, listlessness and irritability Learning problems including short attention spam and retardation Physical problems including loss of appetite, nausea, headaches, abdominal pain, muscle aches, and constipation

4 Management Early identification is key. Children who are at risk should be screened between the ages of 6 and 72 months old. If lead poisoning is determined than the source should be located and removed to prevent further damage. Children who do test positive will possibly need special medication and or a special diet.

5 Most Important! Encourage children to wash hands and not to put things in their mouths. Educate this is a totally preventable health issue.
