Developing a Work Schedule

Work Schedules  We have now learned about the following:  Job Design  Job Simplification  Job Enlargement  Job Enrichment  Job Categories  Full-time  Part-time  Seasonal  Flex-time  Job Sharing

Schedules  How do managers decide who works when?  What do they need to consider when creating a work schedule?  What are some factors a manager may need to consider when they are creating a weekly, or bi-weekly work schedule?

Things a Manager Must Consider  Managers have to consider the following factors when developing a work schedule:  Hours available  Hours allowed per worker  Busy times of day = more employees needed  How many employees will be working  Rest and Lunch breaks  Overtime opportunities  Statutory Holidays

What Shifts Do I Need?  Exactly what shifts will you need?  Examples  A retail store might base their coverage on the number of customers they expect to service during a given time frame  A call center might base their shifts on call volume (when do the expect the most incoming calls?)  Industry/Factories use a 9 80 work schedule – 80 hours of work in 9 business days, providing every other Friday off

Who Should I Select to Work?  Who is available to work?  Students can be difficult to schedule based on class/school schedules and extra curricular activities  Who works well with others?  Some employees do not work well together  Who has the right skill for the shift?  You need someone with the proper training for the task- e.g. Cashier, salesperson, etc.

How Much Can I Spend?  Organizations budget an amount that is to be used on wages  Retail stores determine budgets based on previous sales  Factories just need the job to be filled  Is someone who earns less more valuable to a company?

Break Time  Employers must schedule employees for breaks – against the law not to  Some breaks are paid, some are not – depends on the company  Some companies determine when you will take your break. E.g. Bell City Auto Center – 10am, 12pm, 2:45pm.  Some companies allow employees to decide when break will be taken  Retail stores – employees must ensure that someone is covering their area/department

Overtime  Employees can not be forced to work overtime, however employers prefer when employees choose to work overtime  Hourly wage employees will be paid for overtime work – time and a half, etc.  Salary paid employees have to give up free time  Some employers will ask employees to come in and work overtime  Some employers will post overtime hours and allow employees to claim them

Statutory Holidays  Statutory Holidays are paid days off for all employees celebrating the following:  New Year’s Day  Good Friday  Canada Day  Labour Day  Christmas Day  Full wage must be paid on these days  Other holidays require businesses to pay employees extra for working when open: Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Thanksgiving, and Boxing Day
