Objective: Learn to identify, write, and compare ratios and rates.

Ratio What is a Ratio? A ratio is a comparison of two quantities(numbers) using division Three Ways to Write a Ratio Fraction With “to” With “:”

Remember! A fraction is in simplest form when the GCF (greatest common factor) of the numerator and denominator is 1. Example:

Try This! Cups chocolate chips to cups of cream A recipe for homemade ice cream calls for 6 cups of cream, 1 cup of sugar, and 2 cups of chocolate chips. Write each ratio in all three forms. Cups chocolate chips to cups of cream Cups of sugar to total cups of ice cream For every 2 cups of chocolate chips there are 6 cups of cream Simplify Find total number of cups

Writing Ratios Suppose Ms. McLamb drove 75 miles in 3 hours. Write the ratio of miles to hours in fraction form. This is a rate.

Example 1: 20 students are asked to choose their favorite music genre. 8 chose pop, 7 chose hip-hop, and 5 chose rock. Write the ratios in all three forms. Rock to Hip-hop Rock to Pop and Hip-hop

Example 2: On average most people can read about 600 words in 3 minutes. Write the ratio of words to minutes in simplest form.

Example 3: Honey lemon cough drops come in packages of 30 drops per 10 oz bag. Cherry cough drops come in packages of 24 drops per 6 oz bag. Which package has the greater ratio of drops to oz?
