A.S. in Nanotechnology A new degree at Ivy Tech Community College

Curriculum Models Have used other community college – university partnerships as curriculum models Chippewa Valley Technical College and University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Dakota County Technical College and University of Minnesota – Minneapolis Bucks County Community College and Penn State University

Planned Curriculum CHEM 105/111Chemistry I4-5 COMM 101Fundamentals of Public Speaking3 ENGL 111English Composition3 ENGL 211Technical Writing3 IVYT 1XXLife Skills Elective1 MATH 136College Algebra3 MATH 137Trig. w/Analytic Geometry3 PHYS 101Physics I4 ElectiveSocial Science/Humanities3 XXXX-XXXScience/Technology Elective3-4 NANO 101Fundamentals of Nanotechnology I 3 NANO 102Fundamentals of Nanotechnology II 3 NANO 201 Nanoelectronics 3 NANO 211Intro to Materials Characterization 3 NANO 221Nanoscience – Specialized Areas 3 NANO 231Nanomaterials 3 NANO 241Nanoscience Manufacturing 3 NANO 251Micro and Nano Fabrication5 NANO 271Thin Film Deposition3 NANO 299Nanoscience Internship 2 Total 64-67

Nanotechnology Certificates What do we do for students in other STEM degree programs who have an interest in Nanotechnology? Those students who are majoring in biotechnology, electronics, electrical engineering technology, chemistry or physics will have an opportunity There are planned certificates to allow non-nanotechnology majors to take 4-6 classes in nanotechnology

Nanotechnology program approval steps The proposal was written by a group of administration and faculty to include curriculum, employment opportunities, costs, student demand, and fit to the Ivy Tech mission Administration approved from Ivy Tech’s north central region The Ivy Tech regional academic officers, chancellors and president approved the proposal The regional board of trustees and state board of trustees approved the proposal The Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved the program in June of this year The process consumed more than a year to complete

Program implementation timing Approval by Indiana Commission for Higher Education in June, 2010 Program Chair, Abdollah Aghdasi hired – March, 2011 Nanotechnology students entering program – begun August, 2010 First offering of Nanotechnology courses – August, 2011 Have 19 students in first year, then growth after that

Educational Clean Room An educational clean room will be employed by Ivy Tech to provide basic training in clean room protocol, use of training level imaging, deposition and wet lab equipment Levels of clean room from “mock” to class 10,000 Provide first year experience for Ivy Tech students Into second year, Ivy Tech students will be allowed to enter Notre Dame clean rooms for lab exercises –Notre Dame will charge Ivy Tech students internal fee for usage. This fee will be built into tuition –More advanced processes and research grade equipment will be utilized at Notre Dame clean rooms.

Equipment Acquisition Scanning Electron Microscope

Atomic Force Microscope

Thermal Evaporator with sputtering

MKS Vacuum Trainer

University of Notre Dame support for Ivy Tech Community College  Faculty advice on lecture topics and lab skills  Training of Ivy Tech students on the research tools used by nanotechnologists and other educational opportunities  Special presentations by Notre Dame faculty to Ivy Tech students  Low use rates for Ivy Tech students in Notre Dame labs  Have been and will continue to be instrumental in curriculum development advising

Penn State University Support for Program The NACK (Nanotechnology Applications & Career Knowledge) center at Penn State –Provides curriculum developed for community college level students –Provides instructor training –Allows remote access to imaging equipment –Found at

Collaborating with research universities to apply for NSF grants Ivy Tech partnered with University of Notre Dame Submitted a proposal for transforming and disseminating Nanotechnology Education at Ivy Tech Aghdasi as PI and 2 ND faculty member as co-PIs Grant was $200K if written just by a community college, $250K if partnered with a four-year college

How the grant will be used 16 summer research fellowship to Ivy Tech students to conduct research at co-PI’s labs in Notre Dame 2 undergraduate research assistantships Purchase of equipment: -Two MJB3 Mask Aligners - Zeiss Axiotron Optical Microscope - Olympus BH2 Optical Microscope Stipend for Ivy Tech students to present on nanotechnology at local high schools Workshops for high school students Summer salary for PI (3 months) and co-PIs (two weeks)

Transforming Ivy Tech-South Bend to Central Midwest Hub for Nanotechnology Ivy Tech South-Bend collaborates with Penn State to develop Central Midwest NACK Network Site at South Bend Aghdasi co-PI in NSF proposal Ivy Tech’s share, $165K for three years

Developing Central Midwest NACK Network Ivy Tech will offer a capstone semester of nanotechnology courses for all 23 campuses at South Bend Granting a Certificate in Nanotechnology Outreach to other colleges to encourage them to send their students for this immersion experience to South Bend Will integrate and institutionalize the capstone semester into the Nanotechnology program

Partnering With Florida International University Ivy Tech-South Bend is a partner in an NSF grant: “The Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Nano- Magnetoelectronic Information Processing” Not a funded partner, but Ivy Tech students will have research opportunities at Florida International University, University of California Berkeley, University of Minnesota, University of Houston Also research opportunities for faculty

How would you start a program? Get together in groups and answer the following questions: –Are you interested in pursuing this technology as a degree or elective classes? –Do you have a local university working on this technology? Can you create a relationship? –Are you interested in Ivy Tech-South Bend nanotechnology capstone semester? –Do you have experiences to share?
