Easy Way for Teachers to Conduct Online Courses Prof. Nian-Shing Chen Department of Information Management National Sun Yat-Sen University Kaohsiung, Taiwan IWALT2000: Dec. 4-6 International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technology Massey University, Palmerton North, New Zealand

NSYSU Cyber University n Currently, 34 credit courses available online n Two certificate programs provided  Electronic Commerce Program  Management Information System Program n Over 1000 students enrolled per semester n Over people registered as lurkers n Students can waive the courses they taken after they passed the entrance exam to do master study n Up and running for three years

Personal Experiences on Cyber University n Developing web-based teaching/learning system for four years n Conducting online courses with credits for three years n My course “Computer Networks and the Internet” normally has about 100 students enrolled every semester n Most of them are working people n Students coming from different part of the country

Challenges for Teachers to Conduct online Courses n Reluctant to prepare online multimedia course materials.  Lack of skills  Without strong incentive  No time n Don’t know how to do online instructional design  Not familiar with online teaching/learning environment  Not familiar with IT(Computer and/or Internet literacy)

Think about the real situation in traditional classroom teaching n How do you teach in the traditional classroom? n What is the major activity which teachers are doing in the traditional classroom? n Why students sit in your class every week? n Will you write a textbook for your course by yourself? n Do you prepare handouts or slides for your classroom lecture?

Easy Way to Conduct Online Courses n Two tools to facilitate teachers to do online teaching:  Wisdom Master and Media Master n Media Master:  Help teachers to do online explanation/commentary, the way is just similar to traditional classroom teaching. n Wisdom Master:  Support teachers to do instructional design and conduct online teaching/learning activities

4 Basic Principles n Now, I want to adopt David Merrill stated in his keynote speech, the 4-basic principles:  Activation,  Demonstration,  Application,  and Integration

Demonstration n NSYSU Cyber University  HTML Outline + Electronic White Board HTML Outline + Electronic White Board  HTML Outline + Beautiful Image Graphics(1) HTML Outline + Beautiful Image Graphics(1)  HTML Outline + Beautiful Image Graphics(2) HTML Outline + Beautiful Image Graphics(2) n Team Teaching for English Learning  n Question and Answer QuestionAnswer

Application n No Matter How You Agree/Disagree with My Ideas/Concepts  You have to practice yourself  The URL is  Please have a trail  Recording DEMO

Integration n Feedback from the audience n Q&A n  Continue to improve the system and the way we conduct online courses

Conclusions n IT is not going to replace teachers n IT is just a tool to facilitate good teachers to be online 24hrs for delivering excellent commentary for active learners.

Thank You for Your Attention!
