A joint is where two or more bones meet. There are different types of joints. The different types of joints allow the body to move in different directions.
Ball-and- socket joint. Hinge joint. Pivot joint. Saddle joint.
A ball-and-socket joint allows movement in many directions, including back and forth, side to side and circular movements. Some examples of such joints are the hip joints and shoulder joints. The ball-shaped end of one bone fits into the cup-shaped socket of another bone to form a ball-and-socket joint.
A hinge joint works like a door hinge. It allows back and forth movements. Some examples of such joints are the knee joints, elbow joints, finger joints and toe joints.
A pivot joint allows the rotation of a bone around another. An example of such joints is the neck joints.
A saddle joint allows a bone to slide in two directions: back and forth, as well as side to side. An example of such joints is the thumb joints.
