The Flipped Classroom

What does it mean to “Flip?” What is typically presented in class (i.e. lectures, content, background knowledge, or real life experiences) by a live teacher, students receive at home via a podcast, YouTube video, and/or other online resources.

What does it mean to “Flip?” What is typically given as homework is done in class with the assistance of the teacher.

The Khan Academy Salman Khan at TED

The Flipped Classroom is NOT: Just online videos About replacing teachers with videos An online class Students working without structure Students working in isolation Students spending the entire class online

The Flipped Classroom IS: A means to increase teacher contact time An environment that increases student responsibility Blending of direct instruction and constructivist learning A class where all students are engaged A class where absent students won’t fall behind A class where all students are engaged in their learning

3 Keys to a Flipped Classroom 1.Homework 2.Lesson Quality 3.Production Quality

Advantages Using technology to give students “control of their interactions has a positive effect Excellent video lectures are freely/easily available Time for hands-on learning and creative projects

Possible Pitfalls Technology Teachers have to relinquish some control Students not coming prepared

Screencast

A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.

WHAT IS SCREENCASTING? A screencast is a digital recording (movie) that captures actions taking place on a computer screen. Screencast production requires some kind of video- capture software and a microphone. The final product will be a video that can be posted on a web page or Blackboard. It can also be shared via a link in an or IM. Definition from:

Common Uses Narrating a PowerPoint Presentation Create a “How-to” Tutorial Video Lecture Capture Introduction Video (break the ice)

Why would a teacher create a screencast? Create a tutorial for clarifying complex topics. Create a training video to capture critical procedures students need to know. Create a demonstration to convey your expert knowledge. Create sample exemplar for students to view.

How does a teacher go about creating a screencast? Identify the prior knowledge required and the learning goals. Decide how to chunk the information and introduce small bits at a time. Develop a sketched storyboard of your ideas. Write the script out, with your notes to yourself included. Gather all the URLs and images collected before you begin. Practice to get the timing and voice right. Determine how to host and distribute the completed project.

Screencast-O-Matic is a Java-based application that anyone can use to create screencasts of their screen with no additional software to download. Without even registering to the site, you can record anything that happens on your screen just by setting the capture size, choose if you want audio included, and click go. When done, you can publish the screencast online or download it in.mov format. Free to use. Videos up to 15 minutes.
