Academic vs. Applied  Professional Psychologists come in two groups – academic and applied  What kind is Dr. McCarty?  Half of all psychologists fall into each group

Academic Psychologists  Professors  Researchers  Educational Advisors/Consultants  Create new knowledge, teach, do research, advise the community  Often get a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in an academic area (Cognitive, Educational, Experimental, etc.)

Applied Psychologists  Examples:  Clinical Psychologists  Counseling Psychologists  School Psychologists  Industrial-Organizational Psychologists

What do Academic Psychologists do?  Professors:  Teaching  Service  Research  Educational background varies depending on level:  Technical/community college  University  Research Focused University
