1 Graduate Study in Psychology and Related Fields
PSY 100 – Dr. Blakemore

2 Basic Fields Developmental Psychology Social Psychology
Experimental Psychology Physiological Psychology or Behavioral Neuroscience Cognitive Psychology Psychometrics and Quantitative Psychology

3 What degree? The Ph.D. is the essential degree to work in basic fields in psychology Generally one earns a master’s degree in a basic (not applied) field of psychology in order to compete in applying to doctoral programs when one’s u/g record wasn’t strong enough to get in to a doctoral program. Note: it is typical to apply directly to a doctoral program from the bachelor’s degree – not to go BA – MA – Ph.D. We will focus on the application process next But note that applying to doctoral and master’s programs is quite different.

4 Where do doctoral psychologists in basic fields work?

5 The most common employer is academia – colleges and universities
Different levels of academia Community colleges (e.g., Ivy Tech) Regional state universities (e.g., IPFW) Liberal Arts colleges (e.g., Hope College) Doctoral granting universities These vary in emphasis and prestige Mainly u/g and master’s, with some doctorates (e.g. Ball State) Public, doctoral-granting (e.g., IU or Purdue) Private, doctoral-granting (e.g., Notre Dame) Even within these categories there are different levels and focuses But generally, the higher level of degree an institution offers, and the more prestigious it is, the more regular, full time faculty will do research, and the less they will teach.

6 University Professors
What do they do? Three parts to the job Teaching Research Service The balance varies greatly in different institutions Often the job is very flexible and self-directed Teaching can be a small or large part of one’s job Same for both research and service It may vary at different points in one’s career also

7 Applied Fields Clinical Counseling I/O School
We will focus on clinical/counseling a little more than the others In applied fields, one can seek either a master’s or a doctorate, and expect to be able to seek employment in the field

8 If you’re interested in an applied field, what degree should you seek?
One can work in any of the applied fields in psychology with either a master’s or a doctorate, although salary, employment opportunities, and the ability to work independently is greater for those with the doctorate Also, keep in mind one generally applies from a bachelor’s degree to one type of program or the other Also, it is generally considerably more difficult to get into a doctoral program than a master’s program You usually earn a master’s degree on your way to the doctorate, but the program is thinking of you as a doctoral student when you apply.

9 Doctoral degrees: The Ph.D. vs. the Ed.D. vs. the Psy.D.
The Ph.D. is first a research degree, and is awarded by universities All fields in psychology offer the Ph.D. If one earns a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, one will usually earn it from a Psychology Department in a university One might earn a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from a Department of Psychology or a School or College of Education, again in a university One might also earn an Ed.D. in Counseling (but never in Clinical) Psychology from a College of Education. However, a Department of Psychology outside of a School of Education would not offer an Ed.D.

10 The Psy.D. The Psy.D. is in clinical psychology
For the most part, it is not a research degree – except to be “consumers” of research, but not “creators” of research There are some exceptions, but often one does not need to complete a dissertation for a Psy.D. (a piece of original research or scholarship). Some Psy.D. degrees are in universities, but often lower on the prestige scale than universities which offer the Ph.D. (e.g., Wright State in Ohio, and Indiana State in Indiana offer the Psy.D.) Other Psy.D. degrees are in free standing professional schools of psychology (e.g., the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, now known as Argosy University) Universities will often not hire people with Psy.D. degrees as full time, regular faculty, because it is generally a practice degree, not a research degree

11 Where do doctoral psychologists who work as health service providers work? (This usually means doctoral-level clinicians.)

12 Salaries of Doctoral Psychologists
2001 and 2007 data from APA Faculty salaries are 9/10 month – if they work in the summer full time, add 20% to the salary.

13 Where do master’s level psychologists work? (APA, 2003 on 2002 data)
Source is APA again, 2002 data on master’s psychologists

14 Master’s salaries

16 Licensing of applied psychologists
In most states one must have a doctoral degree in psychology to be licensed as a psychologist, plus Completion of an internship (usually full time for a year) Supervised postdoctoral clinical experience Passing licensure exam In Indiana, such licensure is called HSPP (Health Service Provider in Psychology) In Indiana, it requires The doctorate The Internship Pass the national licensure exam Pass a test on the Indiana code Supervised post doctoral clinical experience Continuing education each year to keep their license More details at:

17 Licensing of master’s counselors
In some states, master’s counselors can be licensed, but not as psychologists In Indiana, this type of licensure is called licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) There are many master’s degrees which may lead to this kind of license, including master’s degrees in psychology You can find more details at:

18 For example, the program at IPFW
In the College of Education and Public Policy, there is a master’s program in Counseling which leads to this kind of license in its marriage and family (or agency) counseling track Of course there are others throughout Indiana

19 The MSW Social workers who are therapists/counselors are referred to as clinical social workers MSW holders can be in independent practice in all 50 states (the same is not true, for example, for holders of master’s degrees in psychology) More information about licensure in Indiana can be found at the earlier licensure link for master’s counselors.

20 MSW at IPFW There is an MSW program offered here at IPFW, through the program at IUPUI, housed in Human Services (although not connected directly to them) This program is currently taking students every three years (only)

21 Other degrees The Kuther text gives several examples of other fields that psychology students may pursue in graduate study
