Slavery is not a thing of the past.  Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work.  Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth.  They are deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work or to demand compensation.

Slavery is not a thing of the past.  Historically, slavery was recognized by most societies

Forms of Slavery Slavery is currently outlawed in every country, but continues anyway in the form of:  Debt bondage (a person’s pledge of their labour as repayment for some form of debt)  Indentured servitude (a promise to work for a certain number of years and then be free to work on their own)  Serfdom (peasants who live on and work the land for a Lord)
