Adding Detail Sentences

Prior Knowledge Think about three things you like about your best friend: They always play with you They cheer you up when you are mad or sad You both like the same things They treat you with respect All of these could be reasons you like your best friend

When we write: we also need to think about the reasons or details that support our ideas A paragraph usually has: A main idea Detail sentences Today we will add detail sentences to the main idea.

The main idea is the most important idea from the paragraph It tells what the whole paragraph will be about Details Main idea My best friend Cheers me up Treats me with respect Details Main idea Yosemite is an amazing place The waterfalls are beautiful You can see wildlife

Main idea: Jose is my best friend for many reasons. The details in the paragraph: Support the main idea Example: He always cheers me up when I am sad. Tell more about the main idea Example: One day I was sad, and he told me a hilarious joke to make me smile. Do not tell about other things Example: Jose has an older brother named Victor.

Read the following paragraph: Easter is a fun family day. My family usually eats lunch together. Then, the adults tell the children not to go outside until everything is ready. ____________________. Finally, all the children open their eggs and see what goodies are inside. Easter is definitely an exciting day! Together, let’s write a sentence that could go in the blank.

Let’s read the following paragraph: Third grade is a challenging grade. First you have to learn all of your multiplication tables. _________________________________________. Furthermore, you have to learn how to write main ideas and details. Wow! You sure do learn a lot in third grade. What is the main idea? Third grade is a challenging grade. The details explain why third grade is challenging.

What could be the missing sentence? Let’s think of a detail that could be added to say why third grade is challenging. Think why is third grade hard? Tell your partner why third grade is hard. Did you think of these?: You also have to learn division. You have to learn the letters in cursive writing.

Let’s read the following paragraph: Third grade is a challenging grade. First you have to learn all of your multiplication tables. Next,. Furthermore, you have to learn how to write main ideas and details. Wow! You sure do learn a lot in third grade. What is the main idea? Third grade is a challenging grade. The details explain why third grade is challenging.

The main idea is about Easter Day: “Easter is a fun family day.” The details are telling things, in order, that happen on that day. The sentence that is missing is right after the adults get everything ready. The next sentence should tell what happens after the adults get everything ready.

So our sentence could be like this: Next, the children grab their baskets and find as many eggs as they can that are hidden in the backyard. When the adults say “Go,” all the children race to the yard to find the hidden eggs. When everything is ready, the children run into the backyard and find as many eggs as they can.

Let’s try another paragraph: Last summer, I went fishing with my dad. I thought is was going to be boring, but I enjoyed fishing in the lake. First, we got all of our equipment and got into a small boat. Then we used fishing poles and reeled the line with bait into the water. _________________________. While we waited, my dad told me stories of when he went fishing with my grandfather. Write a sentence that you think you would fit in the blank.

Look at the sentence after the blank: The next sentence says, “While we waited…” So, the sentence before should tell why the child and father are waiting. Examples: Next, we waited until a fish tried to eat the bait. After that, we had to wait for a long time until a fish bit the bait. Next, my dad said we had to wait for a fish to hook on the line.

Now… Copy the paragraph and write a sentence that could fit in the blank. Third grade is a challenging grade. First you have to learn all of your multiplication tables. _________________________________________. Furthermore, you have to learn how to write main ideas and details. Wow! You sure do learn a lot in third grade.
