Electrical and Computer Engineering Minimal Movement Interactive Entertainment Unit

Electrical and Computer Engineering Final Design Changes  Sensor unit switched from Inertial Measurement Unit to Infrared Distance Sensors IMU failed to produce viable data for sensing Three distance sensors are used for power on/off, play/pause, next/previous song, and volume up/down  VS1053b chip on HiFi player from VSLI Solutions has been replaced by VS1053b chip on Olimex MOD-MP3-X

Electrical and Computer Engineering Progress Made Since CDR  User input and gesture recognition fully functional with optoelectronic distance sensors  Sensor Unit is fully wireless with seamless communication with base unit  Display unit constructed Use of acrylic to allow user to view inside the unit LED display mounted MP3 player mounted, with window allowing access to SD card and headphone jack Main circuit board mounted “MMIEU” title display panel mounted

Electrical and Computer Engineering Project Specifications  Provide entertainment via lights and music while enhancing the educational aspect Ability to control MP3 player with sensors requires gesture knowledge an idea of cause and effect and gesture knowledge  Require minimal movement to operate Maximum 9 inch range of hand to fully control music systems  Limit the amount of wires Sensor device is completely wireless

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Specifications Light Requirement Solution:  3216 Bicolor LED Dot Matrix 4 HT1632 driver chips Accessible RAM Memory Addressing Fully functioning font library Marqueeing Artist/Song title Entertaining visualizers

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Specifications Music Requirement Solution:  VS1053b Olimex MOD-MP3-X High-performance, low-power DSP processing core SD card slot Audio line out port Microcontroller accepts commands via UART interface

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Specifications Minimal Movement Requirement Solution:  GP2D120 Distance Sensors Analog voltage output At most, 9 inches between sensors Event threshold controls noise Approximately 3 inch buffer above unit for command activity

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Specifications Wireless Requirement Solution:  XBee Antenna Chip RF Module 2.4Ghz frequency band 100' range indoors Source/Destination Addressing RF Data Rate = 250,000 bps Pin to Pin compatibility

Electrical and Computer Engineering Sensor Unit Play/Pause Next Song Previous Song Power On/Off Volume Up Volume Down Gestures Concealed Components: GP2D120 Distance Sensors XBee Antenna Chip Module Arduino PRO Mini

Electrical and Computer Engineering Display Unit Concealed Components: Arduino Mega 2560 VS1053b Audio Decoder Chip XBee Antenna Chip Module 3216 Bicolor LED Dot Matrix Easy Access to SD memory card and headphone jack Power switch on back LED M.M.I.E.U. Title Display

Electrical and Computer Engineering Safety in Mind Final Design Safety Regulations:  Ensure no access to any enclosed electrical components on either unit except headphone jack and SD card  Secure sensor unit while including access to replace AA batteries  Implement non-refracting windows to enclose distance sensors
