Requirements for a Basic Driver License  6 Point ID Verification  Vision Test  Knowledge Test  50 questions + 1 survey question about organ donation

Test Requirements  Eyesight  Basic license applicants  20/50 vision with or without corrective lenses  CDL license applicants  20/40 vision with or without corrective lenses  Must be able to distinguish between red, green, and amber lights  Written  80% (40/50 questions) answered correctly  Health  CDL license applicants  Must have a medical examiner’s fitness statement and have it renewed every 2 years

Out-of-State Applicants  Applicants who want to transfer a valid out-of- state license must:  Take a vision screening  Those years old are given a probationary license for 1 year and must comply with GDL requirements and restrictions

Road Test  After passing the KV tests and, if applicable, a Behind the Wheel Course, the MVC will validate a permit to practice driving  GDL permit holders under 21 must have a minimum 6 months of supervised driving practice prior to road test  GDL permit holders 21 and over must have a minimum 3 months of supervised driving practice prior to road test

Road Test Checklist  In order to take the Road Test, applicants must bring:  6 Points of ID  Validated permit  A permissible vehicle (one will not be provided by the MVC)  Valid inspection sticker, registration, and insurance documents for vehicle used at test  2 red GDL decals (if applicable)  Vehicle mustn’t have any foot or hand brake obstructions  All signals, brake lights, and windshield wipers must work  No rental cars unless the applicant’s name is on the rental agreement  Applicant must be accompanied by a licensed driver

Elements of the Road Test  The purpose of the Road Test is to make sure the applicant understands the rules of the road and can drive safely  The examiner may test the applicant on the following items: Driving in reverseStopping at signs Following other vehiclesStopping smoothly Nearing corners, intersectionsTurning Parking (parallel)Turning around Sitting properlyUsing the horn Starting a vehicleYielding right-of- Steering properlyway

Road Test Pass/Fail  If an applicant passes the Road Test  The examiner will issue an authorization for licensing  The permit, authorization, and 6 Points of ID Verification must be taken to a motor vehicle agency to obtain a Digital Driver License (DDL)  MVC will license the successful applicant  The MVC will monitor their driving habits for 2 years  If an applicant fails the Road Test  They must wait at least 2 weeks before taking the test again  After several failures, the MVC may require them to wait 6 months before retaking it

Reasons for Rejection  Improper, expired, or no inspection sticker  Lack of examiner access to foot or parking break  Any defect/condition that affects the safe operation of the test vehicle  Poor brakes (pedal mustn’t fade or go to the floorboard)  Parking break doesn’t work  Unsafe tires (smooth, cut, badly worn)  Vehicle interior is unclean  Vehicle failed inspection and motorist doesn’t bring the Vehicle Inspection Report to the Road Test  Vehicle not equipped with radial tires, snow tires, or snow chains when road is snow covered  Fast engine idle  Missing seat belts
