Surfers YOUR NAME HERE! Period 5

Surfing originated in ancient Hawaii and was called “he'e nalu” meaning “wave sliding” before its international discovery. The culture was forgotten after Hawaii had been invaded in the late eighteenth century. However, it was revived in the twentieth century and continues to exist today. Defined by their surfboards, bathing suits, music, language, and laid back attitude, surfers come together to form a distinct subculture. and

Physical Objects -Surfboard -Wet-suit (cold water) -Board short -Board wax -Board leash -Surfboard repair kit -Earplugs -Surf bag mmended-fashion/oakley-global- floral-board-shorts-line/

Language The surfer language can be just as foreign to you as any other language. However, most of us already know some and even use some in our everyday vocabulary without knowing it. Stoked = excited Da Bomb = the best Brah = brother Dude = used when referring to a person Bogus = unfair

Values Some surfers love surfing for spiritual reasons, such as the connection they feel with nature by riding with the waves. Others simply surf for the adrenaline and the love of the water. The values among the surfers vary on personal experiences CLAY-MARZO-KILLIN-IT-ON-THE-COVER-OF- SURFER.html Surfing is very much like making love. It always feels good, no matter how many times you've done it. PAUL STRAUCH, Leonard Lueras' Surfing Hawaii

Norms 1.The surfer closest to the wave has the right to ride it 2.Don’t paddle where the wave is forming and people are lining up to ride it. 3.Communicate with other surfers about which direction you are heading. 4.Don’t throw your board! Hang on to it. It could hurt someone 5.Respect the beach and the ocean as well as other surfers (especially those who are better than you). 6.DO NOT HOG THE WAVES.

Symbols magazine-features/surfing- currentissue/2010/november-issue surfing-magazine/index.html surfer%E2%80%99s-journal/ Though there is no real symbol for the surfing culture, there are plenty of magazines that serve the same purpose. Famous clothing brands such as Oakley and Billabong are surfing symbols too. au/pages/partners_event_partners.htm

Conclusion Surfers are definitely a subculture group. They possess the five distinct components of a subculture. They are peaceful and do not harm others as a counter-cultural group would.
