The Big Debate: iPhone vs Android

The Big Debate: iPhone vs Android - Popularity and community - Reliable platform with options - Obsolescence of technology with new releases - "Jailbreaking" Android - Multitasking - Integration with Google Apps - Limited support - Sales deficit Advantages - The most popular mobile phone to hit the market in history - Built on a reliable platform with options for customization and a huge support system - New models are released each year, outdating the previous model's technology - "Jailbreaking" the phone has become a widespread problem - Capable of running multiple apps at once - Seamlessly integrates with Google Apps - There is 1/10th of the application support found in the Apple Store Online. - Severely behind in amount of sales; the predominantly preferred model is the iPhone Apple vs Samsung lawsuit - cost Samsung $1 billion (paid by 30 trucks filled with nickels) Disadvantages

Advantages of Mobile Computing Locational Flexibility Saves Time Enhances productivity Entertainment Locational flexibility-mobile computing does just that...allows us to be mobile. No longer does anyone have to be plugged in to a specific location for performing computing activities. With mobile computing, you can take the virtual world with you wherever you choose to be. Now, as college students, we can work away from the computer clusters...and as we are becoming young professionals, we have the option of taking work home. Saves Time- boring overseas flight to Athens, took 12 hours of flight time to get there, I was able to watch film, write plays out..all of on my laptop. Enhanced productivity- work flexibility leads to work productivity. If I can do my work from anywhere without waiting for access to a computing facility, I may be more productive. Actually, companies like Apple, Deloitte, and SC Johnson hire home-based employees. Entertainment-As mentioned earlier, with mobile technology, no time is wasted time...it's hard to get bored when we now have a ton of options for games, movies, music, videos....and I don't know what I would do if I didn't have the twitter app on my phone!

Disadvantages of Mobile Computing Insufficient bandwidth Security problems Power consumption Potential health hazards Insufficient bandwidth- mobile internet access is generally slower than direct cable connections. This means that it might take longer to download data, if you are outside a commercial tower. For example, I like to listen to music on Pandora. When I am working at a computer at school or at home, pandora never loses signal. But when I am on the road or using the mobile app, I often experience the music not being available due to insufficient bandwidth, Security problems- when you work mobile, you are subject to your personal information being leaked, hacked, or viruses by data intake. Examples: text messaging, going through the email, phone gets stolen, (facebook, twitter, linkedin) Power consumption- using data eats your battery life. This means that when a power outlet is not available, you must rely entirely on battery power. Potential health hazards-people using mobile phones while driving are distracted from driving. This can lead to car accidents...so checking your instagram pictures likes or checking a text while driving, is the wrong way to use mobile computing.... forgetting how to interact with humans.

Current Examples PDA, palmtops Smartphones, Tablets Laptops, 'Toughbook' Carputers, (Ford SYNC, Mercedes Mbrace)

Current Examples Consumer convenience Business efficiency New business models Apps Shopping-physical and virtual goods Mobile payments

The Future of Mobile Computing 50% of Americans use smartphones 62% use apps, 75% use location, 79% for shopping Mobile internet use grew 45% last year Opportunities to adapt to and utilize these trends
