Graphic Communications Chapter 1

Overview of Graphic Communications (Pg 13) Graphic Communications- the exchange of information in a visual form. Examples: Words Drawings Photographs Involves many methods of transferring and processing images before printing them on a substrate.

Why is Graphic Communications studied? (pg 14) Communication is extremely important to our society. Look at the usage of cell phones by everyone! Magazines, newspapers, television, the Internet all provide us with information through communicating a message. Graphic communications provides a record of the exchange of ideas. Verbal communication, phone conversations, can be forgotten or misunderstood.

Copy and Art Preparation (pg 15) Most printed products have a combination of written material and pictures. Copy Artwork Other terms: manuscript, text, lineart, continuous tone copy, halftone,

Page Composition (pg 17) The process of arranging text and visual images on a page or pages. The initial design is worked out by making a series of quickly executed thumbnail sketches. Can be done mechanically (fig 1-9) or electronically (fig 1-10)

Photoconversion (pg19) Processes that use light to place the original image on to light sensitive film. Process camera (fig 1-11) Used to make a mechanical into a film negative or positive. Can be used to enlarge or reduce originals. Scanner Converts test and images into digital format.

Image Assembly and Platemaking (pg 20) Putting together pages of halftone negatives or positives. (formerly called stripping). Images taped on a carrier sheet. Platemaking Placing an image (from image assembly onto a press plate. The plate is used for printing multiple copies.

Printing Processes (pg 21-24) A process involving the use of a specialized machine to transfer an image from an image carrier to a substrate. Four types: Relief Planography Intaglio Porous Impactless

Binding and Finishing (Pg 24-25) Binding-The physical joining together of multiple pages by: Sewing Stapling Spiral wire or plastic Adhesive Finishing-Enhancing the final product. Embossing, Die-cutting, stamping, lamination.
