Graphic communication is the process of using words and images to send messages. Today most printed products are designed using computers. Graphic design on computers requires both hardware and software.

Hardware Fast computers with a lot of memory Large-screen monitors Scanners for changing printed images into an electronic form computers can use Digital cameras Color printers for previewing color pages and for printing small quantities of documents

Type Letters are measured by their height in points. 12 points = 1 pica 6 picas = 1 inch Leading is the space between lines of type. Typefaces (fonts) are sets of letters, numbers, and symbols that have the same design. Typefaces usually include type styles such as bold and italic.

Graphics There are two categories of printed graphics: ♦ Drawings (maps, charts, cartoons, etc.) ♦ Photographs Graphics can be created as originals or brought in from other sources, such as clip art.

No printing plates or presses are needed. The process is used for printing small quantities on short notice.

Planning a Newsletter Individuals or small companies sometimes do all the planning, designing, and printing aspects of publishing using a personal computer and a printer. This type of small-scale publishing is often called desktop publishing. Newsletters are the most common products of desktop publishing.

Designing Pages for Newsletters Include white space on every page to avoid a cluttered look. Do not use too many graphics. Choose carefully when selecting photos and drawings. On 8 1/2" x 11" paper, use two columns. Print with black ink on colored paper to add color and save on expenses.
