Getting to Know Font Families Each Font Family represents a complete set of characters, letters and symbols for a particular typeface. Font families are divided into 3 categories: Serif, Sans Serif and symbol. Serif Fonts have a tail or stroke which makes it easier for the eye to recognize words. Sans Serif Fonts do not have tails and are commonly used in headlines. Each Font Family represents a complete set of characters, letters and symbols for a particular typeface. Getting to Know The Characters Palette The character palette helps you manually or automatically control type properties such as kearning, tracking and leading. You open the character palette from the options bar by selecting ‘Window’. Font Family Font Style Font Size Set Kearning Vertical Scale Leading Tracking Horizontal Scale

Getting to Know The Characters Palette Leading: the amount of space between two lines of type Kearning: Controls the amount of space between characters and can effect a word or an entire paragraph Tracking: inserts uniform amount of space between selected characters Baseline shift: The vertical distance the type moves from its baseline Leading: the amount of space between two lines of type Kearning: Controls the amount of space between characters and can effect a word or an entire paragraph Tracking: inserts uniform amount of space between selected characters Baseline shift: The vertical distance the type moves from its baseline

Getting to Know The Option Bar Font Family Font Style Font Size Font Color Words can express an idea, but the appearance of the type is what drives the point home. After you create the type you can experiment with its appearance by changing its font, size, and color. You can also apply special effects that make it stand out, or appear to pop off the page.

Creating Special Effects with Type Creating Warped Text

Creating Text On A Path Suppose you want type to conform to a shape, such as an oval or a free-form you’ve drawn? No problem, just create the shape and add the text. 1.Create the shape using one of Photoshops shape tools 2.Add type to a shape by clicking on the horizontal type tool 3.When the pointer nears the path, you’ll see that it changes to the type tool pointer 4.Click the path when the Type Tool pointer displays and begin typing

Book Cover Design ASSIGNMENT: Design Book Cover 1. What is a book cover? What is it used for? What kind of information must be included on it? Think of these questions as you create sketches for an original book cover design. Your sketches are your method of visual brainstorming. They can be as tight (detailed and carefully rendered) or as rough (simple shapes, figures) as you want. The sketches can include words and other notations. 2. Once you decide on a sketch, start to acquire the necessary photographs & images for your book cover.
