UNIT 6 Tractor Hitches PTO’s Hydraulics

Tractors are Powerful Machines Get ‘er done!

Tractor Hook-Up Parts PTO Shaft 3-Point Hook-Up Drawbar Hydraulic Plugs

THE DRAWBAR  Designed to pull loads  Adjust to the correct height to ensure safe towing  Position so the PTO shaft is straight

2 TYPES #1- Stationary  Extends backward or forward  Two or three positions possible with pin movement  Must be adjusted to PTO

2 TYPES continued #2- Swinging  Swings in direction tractor turns.  Must be secured in fixed position to travel on the road or when using PTO.  Can be locked in position to be used as a fixed type.

Drawbar Safety  Must adjust for PTO use  ONLY attach to drawbar, 2-point, or 3-point hitch if pulling load (Never to any other part).  Raising height of bar excessively can cause overturn

Proper Hitching Procedures:  Back tractor slowly into place.  Place tractor into neutral and engage brake before dismounting.  Connect directly behind tractor.  Use lynch pin or hitch pin for locking, along w/ cotter pin or clip.  Always hitch your own tractor. Hitch Pin Lynch Pin

Benefits of 3-Point Hitch  Easy adjustment of load with control levers.  Level implement laterally.  Adjust implement pitch.  Most hitches equipped with sway blocks to restrict side-to-side motion.

Hitching Safety  NEVER work under a raised implement.  NEVER depend on a hydraulic valve for your safety.  Place supports under implement.  Stop and shut down tractor before performing maintenance.  Be aware of location of others.

Quick Attachment Couplers  Used for fast connection and release of implements.  Make sure you hook hitch pins uniformly.  Check coupler for proper locking, cracks and wear.

Power Take-Off (PTO)

3 Types:  Continuous Running - operates when master clutch is engaged  Independent - transmission and PTO powered through separate clutches - PTO will still run when tractor is stopped or in motion  Transmission Driven - PTO runs only when tractor is in motion

PTO Safety  Many accidents occur because of PTO  NEVER attempt to remove anything from PTO while it is in motion.  A tractor engine should always be shut off before leaving the operators seat to perform any adjustment, lubrication, or cleanout of implement

PTO Shields  Developed to make tractor PTO operation safer.  Shields should always be kept in place when machine is running.

PTO Shield Types  Master – prevent contact with PTO stub shaft  Stub shaft guard – enclose stub shaft when not being used  Tunnel Shield – attaches to master shield

PTO Shields Types (cont.)  Integral-journal Shield – completely encloses PTO shaft and rotates with shaft  Fully shielded power shaft (1972) - completely covers universal joints and PTO shaft coupler

What should you do if-  When working on someone’s farm and the boss tells you to use a piece of machinery, but the PTO shaft guard is missing. What should you do? A- Perform the task without saying anything B- Wrap the shaft in duct tape, because duct tape fixes everything! C- Talk to your adult supervisor about the missing shield and tell them the shield needs to be put on before doing the assigned task.

HYDRAULICS  Provides power for steering, brakes, lifting, and powering equipment  Uses tractor engine to operate hydraulic systems

Hydraulics Safety  Check for leaks using a card as shown.  NEVER USE HAND OR FINGERS!  Escaping hydraulic under extreme pressure  Can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.

REMOTE HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS  Single Acting - One pressure line  Double Acting -Two pressure lines - Driven by the tractors hydraulic pump  Flow adjustment possible

Hand Signals Why do we use them? Accidents frequently occur due to……  Equipment being loud  Can not hear each other  Universal communication

Slow it down – decrease speed This far to go Move out – Take off Raise equipment Follow Me Stop

Stop the Engine Start the Engine Come to Me Speed Up Lower Equipment
