1 Know You System Fire Extinguisher & Suppression Activation Training

2 Fire Extinguishers & Fire Suppression Systems
Inspection Maintenance Activation Procedure First-Aid Measures Personal Protection Fire Prevention

3 Daily Inspection “Inspection” is a quick check to verify that the Fire Ext. is in the proper place & in good working order. On Cartridge Operated Ext’s- check that the red stem on top of the cap is in the down position. Check to see if the plunger has been activated & seal is intact. Check exterior housing and hoses for defects. Check for proper & current certification stickers. Check the mounting bracket for defects.

4 Inspection Cont. On Stored Pressure Ext’s- check that the indicator on the gauge is in the green area. If it is in overcharged or undercharged range replace unit. Inspect activation pin, seals, Inspect hose, nozzle, housing, mounting bracket. Check for proper certifications sticker.

5 Inspection Cont. On Mobile Equipment fire suppression systems- check that the pull pin & red actuator knob is in place at all activation points. Check all hoses, connection, nozzles, unit housing and mounting for defects. Check for proper certifications stickers. If any of these components are defective, get the unit checked or serviced. Before operation.

6 Steps of a Physical Inspection of a Fire Suppression Systems
Inspect all activation points. Check unit for pin, handle, safety clips

7 Steps of a Physical Inspection of a Fire Suppression Systems Cont.
Inspect hose & spray nozzles for damage, kinks, or missing parts, etc. If integrity of the system has been compromised shut it down, get it fixed.

8 Steps of a Physical Inspection of a Fire Suppression Systems Cont.
Visually inspect the gas cartridges for damage. Inspect extinguisher unit for damage. Report & repair any substandard units. Make sure unit has a State Fire Marshall Sticker.

9 Maintenance “Maintenance” is a through check of fire ext’s and fire suppression systems. Maintenance is performed by qualified technicians at a minimum of once a year. When you perform your routine inspections, check the maintenance date on the sticker.

10 Proper Step to Activate a Fire Suppressions System.
Stop & Rib all moving equipment. Lower all raised attachments. Shut down engine. If possible turn masters switch off. Activate the fire suppression system.

11 Proper Steps to Activate Fire Suppression Cont.
Exit the vehicle once the fire is out or knocked down safely so you can leave unharmed. If safe to do so secure the hand held ext. in case a flair up of the fire reoccurs. If the suppression can not put out the fire, this unit can be used to help you escape. Call Dispatch or Hoistman as soon as possible, notifying the type of emergency. Put on self rescuer, exit to refuge or out of the mine per company procedures.

12 First Aid Measures Eye contact: wash with water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Skin contact: Wash area with soap and water. Inhalation: Remove from exposure. Ingestion: Give large amounts of water and induce vomiting.

13 Fire Prevention, Removing the Potential for Fire Occurrences
Fire Prevention, Removing the Potential for Fire Occurrences. An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure. Good Housekeeping is a must. Check for and remove all rags, paper, or combustible products from engine, or power train compartments daily. Keeping machine in good operating conditions; inspect unit for leaks, drips, chaffed hoses in areas where heat can be generated. Wash off any accumulated hydraulic oil, fuels, or grease, if hydraulic hose fails in the area, wash off area before beginning, don’t burn it off with radiate heat from engines, this can cause a fire.
