Tropical Rainforest By: Half Court

Interesting facts Emergent layer – top layer has tall 150 ft. trees Canopy – next layer has tall treetops or crowns and is rich with plants, animals and insects Understory – middle layer that has small plants, birds and animals such as a leopard Forest floor – bottom layer has few plants that grow and its animals are mice, frogs, snakes, insects, deer, and wild boars Four main layers - Different kinds of trees, flowers, and other plants are found in each layer.

Interesting Facts When they decay all the rich nutrients are recycled back into the soil to feed the roots of other plants. Heat and moisture cause plants and animals to rot quickly once they die.

Climate The tropical rainforest is the wettest place on Earth. It rains almost everyday and they can get 100 to 400 inches of rain in one year. The temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The humidity is between 77 & 88 percent. High heat and humidity cause cumulus clouds to form early in the afternoon almost everyday. Seasons do not change it is hot and wet year round.

This picture shows a rainforest waterfall. Climate This picture shows a rainforest waterfall.

Plants Scientists think there are 260,000 different kinds of plants in the Tropical Rainforest. Examples of plants that came from the rainforest are: avocado, banana, lemon, orange, peanut, pineapple, pepper, and coffee. This a banana plant which first came the Tropical Rainforest.

Plants Trees are a plant that is commonly found in the rainforest. Some canopy trees can grow to 120 feet. Their leaves look like big umbrellas. One type of plant that grows in the Tropical Rainforest is an air plant which grows on trees.

Animals The Bengal Tiger is orange and brown with white on its cheeks, mouth, eyebrows, and stomach. It also has long, black stripes. It weighs up to 575 pounds. The Harpy Eagle is one of the largest an most powerful of its fifty species.

Animals Monkeys The Proboscis monkey is only found in the southeastern part of Asia. The Golden Lion Tamarin is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. It gets its name from the its appearance. The name golden comes from the color of its mane, lion comes from the fur around its face looks similar to a lion’s, and Tamarin is the species of monkey it is.
