What is a Rainforest? What is a Rainforest? A lesson about our world’s rainforest.

2 What is a rainforest? A rainforest is a forest that is made of tall trees. It is located in an area with a warm climate, known as the tropics. And, it rains a lot.

3 Where are the rainforests’ located?
The world’s rainforest can be found in Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America and South America.

4 Who knows the name of the largest rainforest?
Yes, it is the Amazon rainforest, which is located in South America.

5 Now, let’s review what it takes to make a rainforest.

6 What is a canopy? A canopy is created by super tall trees (can be over 100 feet) that have branches that overlap each other. In other words, the trees create something like a roof for the rainforest. A Kapok Tree

7 Just For Fun Scientist believe that there could be 70 to 90 percent of the rainforest’s living is found in the trees that make the canopy!

8 What are the tropics? The tropics are areas on earth where the temperature is always warm. In other words, the rainforests do not have cold winters like we do. Also, the rainforest receive a lot of sunshine in the tropics, which help the trees and plants grow as big as they are.

9 How much does it rain in a rainforest?
Scientists have estimated or guessed that it rains at least 80 inches per year. It is said that in some rainforest, it rains up to an inch a day.

10 What kind of things live in the rainforest?
There are all different kinds of living things in the rainforest. There are different types of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, fish, and insects. As for plants, there are many different types of tree, green plants, flowering plants, moss, and fungi growing.

11 Your Assignment The class will be broken up into groups of three.
Each will get an opportunity to research the living organisms in a rainforest. Each person will choose two creatures or plants to research. Then your group will create a concept map about living things in the rainforest.

12 Your Assignment continued
Your concept maps will be developed on Kidspiration. The concept maps should include a picture of the living organism, and a few fun facts about your organism, including its name.
