A Biblical Basis

Melchizedek The Paschal Lamb The Manna The Ark of the Covenant

The bread and wine offered by the priest-king Melchizedek Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine. He was a priest of God Most High. (Genesis 14:18) …where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 6:20)

Offered up Consumed as food The Passover Ritual Prescribed (Exodus 12:1-20)

Sustained the Israelites through out their pilgrimage Perishable The Israelites ate the manna for forty years, until they came to settled land; they ate the manna until they came to the borders of Canaan. (Exodus 16:35)

Tablets In the ark you are to put the covenant which I will give you (Exodus 25:16) Manna As the Lord had commanded Moses, Aaron placed it in front of the covenant to keep it (Exodus 16:34) Rod of Aaron Then the Lord said to Moses: Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the covenant, for safe keeping as a sign to the rebellious (Numbers 17:25)

Jesus’ teaching about the Eucharist Jesus’ discussion about faith - The unique and special faith needed to accept His difficult teaching about the Holy Eucharist

I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh. (John 6:51) Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. (John 6:53) For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. (John 6:55)

Discourse takes place immediately after the multiplication of loaves Jesus claims superiority of His bread over manna Audience understood Jesus literally Jesus repeats the literalness of His teaching Many disciples reject Jesus’ teaching

I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven that a man may eat of it and not die. (John 6:48-50)

How can this man give us his flesh to eat? (John 6:52) This is a hard saying; who can listen to it? (John 6:60)

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. (John 6:53) Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. (John 6:54) For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (John 6:55) Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. (John 6:56) Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. (John 6:57) This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever. (John 6:58)

As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. (John 6:66) Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:67-69)

Matthew 26:26-30 Mark 14:22-26 Luke 22: Corinthians 11:23-26 This is my body … This is my blood …

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? (1 Corinthians 10:16) Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 11:27)

Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks damnation upon himself. (1 Corinthians )

Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God… They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the Flesh of our savior Jesus Christ, Flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in His goodness, raised up again. (Letter to Smyrnaeans)

I have no taste for corruptible food nor the pleasures of this life. I desire the Bread of God, which is the Flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the seed of David; and for drink I desire His Blood, which is love incorruptible. (Letter to Romans)

We call this food Eucharist; and no one is permitted to partake of it, except one who believes our teaching to be true…. For not as common bread nor common drink do we receive these; but since Jesus Christ our Savior was made incarnate by the word of God and had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so too, as we have been taught, the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by Him, and by the change of which our blood and flesh is nourished, is both the Flesh and the Blood of the incarnated Jesus. (Apology)

Jesus has declared the cup, a part of creation, to be His own Blood, from which He causes our blood to flow; and the bread, a part of creation, He has established as His own Body, from which He gives increase to our bodies. (Against Heresies)

Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that, for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the Body and Blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm. Do not judge in this matter by taste, but be fully assured by faith, not doubting that you have been deemed worthy of the Body and Blood of Christ. (Catechetical Lecture)
