2 What is Faith? John 6:30-40

3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 ESV) So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17 ESV)

4 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31 ESV)

5 John 6 Leads Us Toward Jesus’ Definition of Faith
V. 1-15, He fed 5,000 men V , He is at Capernaum Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6:26-27 ESV)

6 John 6 Leads Us Toward Jesus’ Definition of Faith
V. 1-15, He fed 5,000 men V , He is at Capernaum V , He rebukes them for seeking food Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” (John 6:28-29)

7 John 6 Leads Us Toward Jesus’ Definition of Faith
V. 1-15, He fed 5,000 men V , He is at Capernaum V , He rebukes them for seeking food V , He answers that they must believe

8 What Shall We Have Faith In?
So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” (John 6:30-31 ESV) A sign to see and believe in? A sign like Moses worked? A sign to distinguish Him from demonic power?

9 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people (John 2:23-24 ESV)

10 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (John 3:1-2 ESV)

11 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. (John 6:14-15 ESV)

12 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God (John 12:42-43 ESV)

13 What Shall We Have Faith In?
Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” (John 6:32-34 ESV) Wasn’t Moses, But God who was the giver True bread gives life to the world True bread of life is Jesus

14 What Shall We Have Faith In?
Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” (John 6:32-34 ESV)

15 Jesus’ Definition of Faith
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. (John 6:35-36 ESV) Jesus doesn’t give the bread of life, He IS the bread of life

16 They believed in the signs But where did they get their life
They believed in the signs But where did they get their life? Jesus IS the bread, food, sustenance, the LIFE

17 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:37-40 ESV)

18 Jesus does the will of the Father
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— (John 6:44-45 ESV) One who comes will not be lost One who comes will have eternal life One who comes will be raised up on the last day

19 I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:48-51 ESV)
