 1. The peoples of West Africa needed to trade with other people because western Africa has a very dry, desert climate and they needed food.

 2. Gold and salt were frequently traded in Western Africa.

 3. The silent barter system was a way to trade goods without face to face contact. It prevented conflict between the people who were trading.  It also kept the location of the gold mines in the West African empires a secret.

 4. Islam became the dominant religion in West Africa due to trade.

5. Timbuktu was an important trade city because it was located in the Sahara Desert at a crossroads of trade routes. It also became a center of trade, education, and Islamic culture.

 6. Ghana, Mali, and Songhai were the empires located in West Africa.

 7. Countries sent explorers around the world to find a quicker way to the Far East markets.

 8. The countries of Portugal, Spain, France, and England sent men out to explore the New World for  Gold!  Glory!  God!
