 A seed is an embryonic plant  It has the potential to develop into a full plant  Its small size and independence of the parent plant allow it to be dispersed long distances, and establish itself nowhere near the parent plant

 Seeds result from the fertilization of the ovule with sperm from the pollen  Most seeds consist of three main parts: An embryonic plant A store of resources A seed coat

 The embryonic plant is a tiny but already formed version of the mature plant  The embryonic leaves are called cotyledons  The already formed root = radicle  Already formed shoot (aboveground stem) is the plumule Hypocotyl = below the cotyledon Epicotyl = above the cotyledon

 The new plant will have to grow a bit before it can photosynthesize on its own.  it has to have storage reserves to live off of  reserves are found in the endosperm, include fats, starch, and protein  The size of the endosperm can vary widely

 The outermost layer of the seed  Protects the embryo from mechanical damage and drying out  Varies widely species to species depending on the stresses the embryo is likely to face

 big seeds = more storage, better chance of survival, higher investment, less produced  Small seeds = less storage, lower survival, lower investment, more produced
