The Opportunity for Scotland in Geothermal Seonaid Vass Director, Renewable Energy Low Carbon Technologies

Legislative and policy drivers EU Priorities - EU Energy Efficiency Directive - Obligation on each Member State to set an indicative national energy efficiency target Scottish Government Targets - Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 –Reduce energy demand by 12% by 2020; –Source 11% of heat demand from renewables by 2020; Draft Heat Generation Policy Statement Targets –40,000 more homes to be connected to District Heating –1.5TWh of heat delivered by District heating by 2020 (domestic and non-domestic properties) Scottish Planning Policy –National Planning Framework 3 - Work ongoing with local authorities to build national and local authority heat maps into development plans.

Reducing Costs & Economic Opportunities Scottish Enterprise paper- Heat Recovery: sector opportunities for sustainable growth in Scotland Heat Recovery: –Waste heat recovery –Renewable heat from geothermal and ambient heat sources Economic opportunities of scale for industry from excess heat reused : (a) on site for industrial symbiosis (b) on site or off site for potential district heating networks

Why focus on Low Carbon Markets? Scottish low carbon: 78,000 jobs, £10.1bn market. Global market £3.4 trillion. ‘Low carbon’ growing faster than rest of the economy Innovative firms grow twice as fast Low carbon SME’s nearly twice as likely to export

SE Low Carbon Priorities Offshore Wind Wave and Tidal Carbon Capture Storage Smart Mobility Sustainable Construction Water and Wastewater Low Carbon Heat Resource Efficiency Circular Economy Smart Technologies –Industrial Biotechnology –Smart production –(advanced engineering) –Environmental monitoring & Sensors –Smart grids & Storage

Analysis: Industry Capability Analysis International Market Survey Supply Chain Analysis Future Direction: Heat Workshop on 27 th October Low Carbon Heat International Showcase 18 th November Development of New International Operating Plan Identification of further support required Realising Economic Potential

Company Capability Initial Analysis Research Purpose: To identify market opportunities arising from the global growth in demand for related goods, services and technologies (in low carbon heating / cooling) and to assess the capabilities of firms in Scotland to exploit these opportunities We Identified 225 low carbon heating and cooling companies, 72 of which completed the survey, equivalent to 32% return rate Majority of the companies were involved in design and installation of equipment although there was also a significant manufacturing base Heat recovery, storage, heat pumps, passive heating and cooling, biofuels and fuel cell companies present. Strong core of companies in the heat control, sensors and monitoring areas Companies in solar and biomass tended to be predominantly installation

Low Carbon Heat International Showcase 18 – 19 November 2014 Event, pm, 18 Nov 2014 – Sheraton Hotel, Edinburgh B2B matchmaking (pre-arranged networking) Exhibition Seminars Drinks reception International delegations – Sweden, Denmark Site visits, 19 Nov 2014 – Central Belt For suppliers, customers (facilities managers), international delegates, others supporting development of low carbon heat sector
