As you’re waiting for the lesson to begin: Write down the most ambitious adjective you can think of to describe Lennie... Write down the most ambitious adjective you can think of to describe George...

Of Mice and Men To form our own opinions of characters – both those of Lennie and George and the new ones that are going to be introduced in section 2…

Who is this? Why do you think this?

Of Mice and Men Characters - George and Lennie: What make these good or bad portrayals of George and Lennie?

Let’s read the second section new... As we’re reading, think about: What new characters we are introduced to... How Steinbeck creates a sense of foreboding in this section... Any words or sections we don’t understand...

What makes the following an effective PEE paragraph? In the novel Of Mice and Men, George controls Lennie. “Give it here!” said George. Here, George is ordering Lennie to do what he has already asked. By repeating himself, he is showing his authority and control. The short sentence also makes what George says seem very blunt and demanding. He is ordering Lennie to do what he says without giving him a chance to respond. The use of the exclamation mark also suggests he is shouting, which is a way of showing Lennie that he is very much in control of the situation and of their relationship.

Of Mice and Men To form our own opinions of the new characters that are introduced in section 2…

Let’s continue to read the second section new... As we’re reading, think about: What new characters we are introduced to... How Steinbeck creates a sense of foreboding in this section... Any words or sections we don’t understand...

Exploring Characters To recap the plot and the characters so far, write one sentence explaining what the following characters are like, what they do, your impressions of them etc. The first one is done as an example for you. George - George left his previous job because of the trouble Lennie got into; he looks after Lennie (despite losing his patience with him at times) and talks to Lennie about the dream of one day owning their own ranch and living The American Dream. Lennie- The boss- Curley- Old man-

Exploring Characters In groups, you’re going to create a character profile for: The boss Candy Curley Slim Carlson

Considering Characterisation Characterisation refers to the ways in which writer’s present or portray characters and the effect this has on the reader’s interpretations and understanding of them. In your exam, you will have to explain your opinions about characters as well as what they add to the actions and messages of the plot. Therefore, complete each of the following paragraphs using PEE. Steinbeck uses animal imagery when describing Lennie because, just like a wild animal, he cannot cope with living with the rules and customs of modern society. “….” This quotation is used because Steinbeck is suggesting….The word “…” is used because… George is presented as a protagonist in ‘Of Mice and Men’ because of his actions in the novel. “…..” This shows that Steinbeck presents George as a hero because…. The use of the word “…” connotes…

Curley’s wife! Gather notes and quotations on: –what we are told about her before we meet her; –her physical appearance; –how she speaks and acts; –George’s reaction to her; –Slim’s reaction to her; –Lennie’s reaction to her; –the reader’s response to her. –Do we admire her, mistrust her, sympathise with her?

Writing in role Writing as Curley’s wife, give your first impressions of George and Lennie...
