6 A PEE Paragaraph The fight scene is important in that it is here that the reader sees that Lennie has no control over his strength and understands that problems will stem from this. When attacked by Curley, Lennie crushes Curley’s hand and even when Curley ‘stood crying, his fist lost in Lennie’s paw.’ Lennie does not let go until George repeated shouts at him to ‘Leggo’ and asks Slim to help him. Steinbeck echoes the animal imagery he uses when he first describes Lennie in Section 1; his use of the word ‘paw’ reminds us of how he was described as moving like ‘a bear’. This, together with the fact that he cannot control his own strength, suggests that Lennie, like an animal, is not capable of reasoning. The inability to control himself also suggests that he is likely to get into trouble.
