Lessons from Katrina Harvard Kennedy School says Communities must be able to… Nurture capable local leadership that can drive rapid, substantive action Focus on inclusiveness and embrace self-reliance Achieve the ability to seek out and interface successfully with outside sources of help (government, foundations, universities, corporations, NGOs …) Be able to evolve & adapt as challenges arise by developing new skills and capacities

The Goal for The Community and Recovery For the City and County of San Francisco to recover from a major hazard in an expedited manner, as well as have as many pre-event residents, and communities, as part of the re-constituted City populous as possible. Meanwhile in small town called San Francisco….

In SF, the underlying issues… Issue is by nature - “negative” There is no hard event “window” San Francisco has a unique situation Unstable social capital environment Acquiring complete skill set is difficult
