Blood Type Lab

What are the 4 blood types?

What are the protein markers on the surface of these RBCs called? ANTIGENS

What are some situations that require knowing a person’s blood type? Transfusions Organ donation Pregnancy Criminal investigations

If the wrong blood types are mixed what happens? Agglutination = clotting

Today you will test the “blood” of 4 people. Carefully follow directions to determine the blood type of each person.

Agglutination? Look for precipitated, solid specks If clumping occurs write a + in the well If not write a - in the well

1.Can Mr. Jones donate blood safely to Mr. Green? B- to AB+ YES – B is not foreign to AB

2. Can Mr. Green donate blood safely to Mr. Jones? AB+ to B- No – A of AB would be foreign to B

3.Which person could donate safely to anyone? Ms. Brown She is O- so her RBCs have no antigens and would not cause any agglutination.

4.List situations where blood typing could be used. Pregnancy Transfusions Organ donations Paternity Criminal investigations

5.What complications can occur in a patient that receives the wrong blood type? Clotting can cause heart attack, stroke or tissue damage.
