SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Construction waste reduction Background Waste reduction requirements General reporting requirements Specific sustainable building standard requirements

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY BACKGROUND

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Background Construction activities create hundreds of millions of tons of waste every year. Construction waste management has benefits upstream and downstream of the materials manufacturing process. Upstream benefits include the reduction in demand for virgin resources and manufactured materials. Downstream benefits include the reduction of waste sent to landfills.

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Background Increasing the amount of building materials recycled can also reduce cost, depending on tipping and recycling fees.

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY WASTE REDUCTION REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Requirements The requirements of the Saint Paul Overlay to the Sustainable Building Policy are to divert at least 75% of construction waste from landfills. For projects without a satisfactory waste reduction credit or requirement, it will be necessary to complete the Construction Waste Calculator available at ul. ul

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Using the Construction Waste Calculator The construction waste calculator predicts an average amount of waste produced, based on the overall square footage of the building. It then measures the recycled amounts of corrugated cardboard, metals, concrete and rubble, dimensional lumber and wood, gypsum wallboard and “other” materials. The calculator measures in weight, by tons.

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY GENERAL REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY General reporting requirements for all guideline systems Completion of the construction waste calculator. Completion of log of all materials recycled and landfilled with receipts from waste management provider. – This may be in individual logs or a summary by waste management provider, detailing quantity and type, and percentage or each type diverted from landfill – Log template available at Submit completed calculator and log to PED and DSI

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIFIC RATING SYSTEMS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY LEED N.C LEED N.C CONSTRUCTION WASTE REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY LEED N.C Construction waste requirement Achieve 2 points for LEED MR Credit 2 for diverting at least 75% of waste from disposal.

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY GBI – Green Globes GBI – GREEN GLOBES CONSTRUCTION WASTE REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY GBI – Green Globes Construction waste requirement Achieve 6 points for credit for diverting greater than 75% of construction waste from landfill or incineration.

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Green Communities MINNESOTA GREEN COMMUNITIES CONSTRUCTION WASTE REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Green Communities Construction waste requirement Minnesota Green Communities does not have a satisfactory waste reduction criterion. Use the Construction Waste Calculator available at paul to ensure that at least 75% of solid waste of construction are recycled or otherwise diverted from landfills. paul

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Minnesota GreenStar MINNESOTA GREENSTAR CONSTRUCTION WASTE REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Minnesota GreenStar Construction waste requirement While section 9A of Minnesota GreenStar offers many possible points that contribute to this requirement, it provides no means to fully comply with the Saint Paul Overlay. Therefore it is necessary to use the Construction Waste Calculator available at paul to ensure that at least 75% of solid waste of construction are recycled or otherwise diverted from landfills. paul

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY LEED for Homes LEED FOR HOMES CONSTRUCTION WASTE REQUIREMENTS

SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY LEED for Homes Construction waste requirement Achieve at least 2.5 points for MR Credit 3: Waste Management for at least 75% waste diversion from landfills and incinerators.
