What is copyright?

Copyright is... A form of legal protection (law) to authors or creators of original works in a form that can be copied. It allows a person to... make and send out copies of their artistic work perform their work display their work in public change their work into something else MOST IMPORTANTLY…to make money from their art!

What’s protected? Books Music & lyrics Plays Choreography Art (photographs, paintings, sculpture, graphics) Movies (DVDs & videos) Video games Software Sound Websites (content AND design)

What’s not? Ideas (song you made up in the shower) Works in the public domain (70-90 years after death) Titles, names, & common phrases and slogans Familiar designs and symbols Numbers Facts Processes & systems (Dewey Decimal)

Who owns copyright? The creator of the work The living family of the creator (if they’re dead) A group of people (jointly) Anyone to whom the copyright of a work has been given

How and when is copyright given? Copyright is automatic in the UK—as soon as a creative work is made, the creator automatically owns the copyright of that item. Works do not need to have the copyright symbol to be copyrighted.

Copyright & the internet The internet is NOT a copyright-free zone! Assume everything belongs to someone else! You must… ▫Check the website’s copyright notice to see whether it permits copying. ▫Acknowledge the source. ▫Reproduce what you’ve downloaded accurately. ▫Not use the material in a misleading manner. ▫Not use the content to sell products or services.

Where can I get copyright-free images and music for my projects? From the library gateway! For projects you will need to use the above links OR create your own artwork/music!!!!
