SS6G10 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, natural resources, and population distribution on Europe. Essential Question  *How do the factors of climate, access to water, and natural resources affect where Europeans choose to live and work?

Populations of Italy and Germany

On your map color in the most populated areas (two darkest red)

On your map color in the most populated areas (two darkest brown)

Climate of Europe Climate is not as big a factor in comparing Italy and Germany. While Italy is warmer, both countries have large populations.

Water, Water, Everywhere Notes: Where people live in Germany and Italy  Germany:  Germany’s area of highest population is on its western boarder along the Rhine river. Germany industry developed there so that it could use the river to transport its goods.  Industry = Jobs = People  Italy:  Italy’s cities much like the UK’s developed where major ports gave it access to the Mediterranean Sea  The exceptions are Milan and Turin that developed on rivers and mountain passes through the alps.

German Industry

Notes: German Economy  Germany has the worlds forth largest economy after the US, China, and Japan.  Manufacturing is the foundation of Germany’s economy. German technology helps keep Germany Europe's largest economy.  German cars are some of the most well known for their high quality, these include Mercedes- Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche  Germany's economy is almost 1/3 larger than Italy's.

Italian Industry: Italian RivieraThe Canals of Venice Roman Coliseum Vatican City

Italy's Economy  Italy's major industries are tourism, machinery, iron and steel, food processing, textiles, clothing and footwear, motor vehicles, and ceramics.  While there are many industries in Italy, they don’t have the technological edge that Germany does.  #5 in world tourism. Italy's beaches and historical tourism being in millions to its economy each year. Popular destinations include: Vatican City (home of the Catholic Church), the Coliseum, the Italian Riviera, and cities like Venice.

Notes: Italy’s Natural Resources  Italy has very few natural resources, and imports nearly all its raw materials and energy needs  Italy’s agricultural land while high quality is often in rough hilly areas. This makes small farms like vineyards (grapes)and olive groves the most productive in Italy.

Notes: Germany’s Natural Resources  Germany has very few natural resources and imports nearly all of the materials for its huge industries.  Agriculture in Germany is primarily located on the European Plain in northern Germany.  German agriculture is very modern and uses cutting edge technology to create huge crops of grains and vegetables like sugar beets, on large farms.

Independent Practice  Write an informative essay highlighting the differences between Russia and the other three countries: Italy, Germany and United Kingdom

TOD  Name one difference between Italy and Germany.
