Cloud Types

Your Goal - You will be able to name three types of clouds.

In this lesson you will: Learn about three kinds of clouds. Choose your favorite kind of cloud and write three sentences about it.

A cloud is made up of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals. What are clouds made of? A cloud is made up of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals.

There are three main types of clouds: Cumulus - fluffy clouds Stratus - layered clouds Cirrus - thin, feathery clouds Cumulus Stratus Cirrus

Cirrus Clouds The word cirrus comes from a Latin word and means a tuft or curl of hair. Cirrus clouds are very wispy and feathery looking.

These long stringy cirrus clouds are sometimes called "mares' tails”.

You usually see cirrus clouds when the weather is nice.

Stratus clouds are low clouds. They form a layer like a blanket.

Stratus Clouds Stratus Clouds stretch across the sky in low, large flat layers. They are like fog, but they do not reach the ground. They often produce mist or drizzle.

Stratus clouds are made of water droplets. When temperatures are cold enough, these clouds may also contain ice particles and snow.

Cumulus Clouds Cumulus clouds are nice weather clouds. Sometimes they can form into big thunderstorm clouds.
