Wrestling with Time January 10

Think About It … For what reasons have you been accused of wasting time? Today we look at how we spend our time – work, play, whatever We consider the wise conclusions Solomon came to

Listen for how many categories for use of time that Solomon lists. Eccles. 3:1-8 (NIV) There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: [2] a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, [3] a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, [4] a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Listen for how many categories for use of time that Solomon lists. [5] a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, [6] a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, [7] a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, [8] a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

Living in Time For what sort of activities is there a time? How are the different categories arranged? What do you think Solomon meant by his statement that “there is a time for everything”?

Living in Time What have been events that cause joy … that cause discouragement? How does God use the even the discouraging and difficult situations to fulfill His plans and purposes for our lives? JoyDiscouragement

Living in Time When is it hard to be sensitive to the appropriateness of the timing of those events in our lives? How do we sometimes work against God and His timing? What are some examples of ways God has worked things out in your life in due time?

Longing for the Eternal Note the title of this section of the lesson, “Longing for the Eternal.” What do you think that phrase means? Listen to what Solomon has to say about this.

Listen to what Solomon has to say about the eternal. Eccles. 3:9-11 (NIV) What does the worker gain from his toil? [10] I have seen the burden God has laid on men. [11] He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Longing for the Eternal How is the fact that God has placed eternity in our heart manifested in our society? How might longing for eternity bring joy? How might the anticipation of eternity be frustrating? According to this passage, what can we not understand? Why do you think God does not tell us the whole story?

Listen for Solomon’s conclusion of God’s purposes. Eccles. 3:12-14 (NIV) I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. [13] That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God. [14] I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

Standing in Awe of God According to these verses, what are God’s purposes for His people here on earth? In what way is finding satisfaction in eating, drinking, and working a gift from God? Why do some people want “the good life” without standing in awe of God?

Standing in Awe of God What would you say if your grandchild one day asked you why you keep trusting God, even when hard times come to you? What evidence would you expect to see in the life of someone who was in awe of God?

Application We are creatures who live in and are bound by time – The appropriateness of our actions is determined both by time and circumstances – How can you use your time this week to build the Kingdom of God? – How can you use the circumstances of your life to glorify the Lord?

Application God has given all people the capacity to contemplate the eternal – We don’t understand everything – We can prepare ourselves for eternity – We can point others to God’s eternal desire for their lives

Application God’s desire for us is well being and joy – This happens when we conform our daily actions to His plan – We must trust Him to guide us through the events of our lives – This week look for things that cause you to be in awe of God’s guidance
