MILTON GLASER BY NATALIE AND KAMILA “To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master.”

EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION  Born 1929 in New York City  Graduated from the Manhattan’s High School of Music and Art and Cooper Union School of Art  Attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy on a Fulbright Scholarship

ARTISTIC STYLE  His style ranges from simplistic to extravagant and experimental  Over his career, his style has changed from hard-edged pop and psychedelic designs to a softer, more natural style  He tries to incorporate different design elements and not to be “too narrow” in scope

CAREER  In 1954, with fellow graduates of the Cooper Union Art School, Glaser founded Push Pin Studios where he was design director for 20 years.  In 1974, Glaser started his own design studio called Milton Glaser Inc. which provided designs for a wide array of products and campaigns and is still in operation today.

LEGACY Some of Glaser’s most notable work had an enormous international influence which is still seen and replicated today. In 1968, Glaser, along with Clay Felker, founded New York Magazine where Glaser was president and design director until 1977.

RECOGNITION  In 2009, Glaser was awarded a National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama for outstanding achievement and support of the arts.  In 2004, Glaser received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, for his “profound and meaningful long-term contribution to the contemporary practice of design.”

IMPACT  Glaser’s most widely recognized work is the “I love New York” design, which was created in 1977 to promote New York tourism.  It became the trademark of New York City and has been widely replicated for different locations around the world.
