2  Born on November 3, 1905 in Boston, Massachusetts  Interested in art at a very early age  During high school, she won four scholarships to the Museum of Fine Arts where she attended classes after school  After high school, she continued her education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

3  Worked as an art professor at Howard University in Washington, D.C.  Studied masks of different cultures  In 1937, she was invited to study at Academie Julian—produced 30 watercolors in her one year there  Also designed fabrics

4  Spent time in Haiti, painting the people and landscapes—her work became energized by bright colors  Began taking her students on trips to cities all over the world to study art  Painted into her eighties and nineties

5  Met Louis Vergniaud Pierre-Noel while they were both graduate students at Columbia University—corresponded for almost 20 years before getting married in 1953  Often had a white artist submit her paintings for awards and prizes because African- American artists were not always accepted  Her greatest wish was to be known as an artist

6  Her work is in museums all over the country  She is the only African-American female painter to achieve fame abroad (outside the US)  Died on June 9, 1998 and is buried on Martha’s Vineyard
