Forum on World Trade in Services

About the Forum

Co-organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People ’ s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People ’ s Government, the Forum on World Trade in Services is scheduled to be held on 9 – 10 June 2005 at the Shanghai International Convention Center. With the growth of the world trade in services as a backdrop and with a particular focus on the opening, cooperation and development in China ’ s services sector, the 2-day event covers a wide range of important topics such as the recent progress in the WTO Doha Negotiations on services trade, China ’ s participation in the WTO Doha trade talks, the growth trends in global services trade, the development of China ’ s trade in services, and investment opportunities in the services sector in China. China ’ s state leader, the Chinese Minister of Commerce, the Mayor of Shanghai, the Director-General of the WTO, China ’ s Ambassador to the WTO, and representatives from world-class services companies will deliver keynote speeches at the Forum. Forum participants include about 400 representatives from governments around the world, international organizations and institutions, senior executives of multinational companies, as well as scholars and specialists. In addition, over 600 delegates from China ’ s central and local governments, state-owned and private companies, professors and experts in China will also participate in the Forum.

Opening: to understand how China will promote the Doha Agenda negotiations on trade in services negotiations on trade in services The Doha Agenda Negotiations on trade in services will come to the final stage in June In this Forum, China will demonstrate its position to vigorously promote the Doha Agenda Negotiations on trade in services. China’s state leaders, Minister of Commerce, Mayor of Shanghai, Director-General of the WTO, and the Ambassador of China to the WTO will air their comments on how to further open China’s service industry in this Forum. Through the comments, Forum participants will be able to learn how the Chinese government will promote the process of service trade negotiations in the Doha Round, and possible action taken by the Chinese government.

Through conference presentations, banquet speeches, and roundtable conferences attended by important Chinese government officials, this Forum will provide a platform for communication between world service providers and the Chinese government and Chinese service providers. This Forum will invite representatives from world-famous service providers to introduce the latest trend in the development of service industry and global trade in services, who will join the discussion and exchanges with provincial governments and their counterparts in China. The Forum will also arrange field trips to visit local service providers in Shanghai and introduce business opportunities for investment in service industry in China, especially in Shanghai. Build an image for participants This Forum will become a focus for the service industries in all participating countries. The corporate image of forum participants will be strongly promoted through press conferences, advertising along the highway from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport to downtown areas and across central commercial districts, as well as wide coverage through satellite TVs, newspaper, internet reporting and other media in Shanghai and across China.
