What’s Needed for this Course? Adobe Captivate Software (on the remote server) Captivate Welcome text file (found in Course Documents>Captivate folder) Captivate PowerPoint file (found in Course Documents>Captivate folder)

Let’s take a look at what you can do with … Adobe Captivate View the files below located on Blackboard/Course Documents Online learning at UMBC Add an attachment

Agenda/Learning Objectives Part One – Overview of Captivate At the end of Part One you should understand: What is Captivate? What are the advantages of Captivate? What are the three key features for the learner? What is the basic contents of a Captivate movie? What are the output options? How can you customize a movie? What are the basic steps to create a Captivate movie? Part Two – Hands-On Learning the Basics of Captivate At the end of Part Two you should be able to: Record a software simulation Edit a movie Add a navigational button Insert a PowerPoint slide Add a Quiz Add a Text Animation Publish a movie

What is Captivate? An easy-to-use, rapid eLearning content authoring tool that allows you to easily create integrated movies displaying: Software demonstrations Interactive, engaging training simulations Scenario-based training Learner assessments (Quizzes)

What are the advantages of Captivate? Ability to train people to use software applications SCORM* 2004 and SCORM 1.2 certified Easy to deploy through learning management systems Compatible with Adobe Flash Player for easy online distribution and access Doesn’t require programming or multimedia skills The files are in a Flash format, are relatively small, yet they have high resolution. Files are easily delivered via the web, CD, or .

What are the Three Key Features for the Learner? 1. View it: Demonstration 2. Do it: Simulation 3. Pass it: Assessment View it Do it Pass it

Key Feature: View it Do it Pass it 1.Demonstration (View it) Allows learner to see a process / procedure complete with mouse movement and text description Learner watches the demonstration Learner does not directly interact with the instructor

Key Feature: View it Do it Pass it 2.Simulation (Do it) Allows learner to practice a process or procedure Learner can receive prompts and feedback Learner directly interacts through: Click boxes Questions Text entry

Key Features: View it Do it Pass it By simply recording your onscreen activity (Do it), Captivate automatically generates a demonstration of the captured procedure including: Mouse clicks Text entries Prompts Learner Feedback

Key Feature: View it Do it Pass it 3. Assessment (Pass it) Tests the learners ability to complete the procedure without prompts or feedback Allows scoring to track results Direct interaction with user

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? A typical Captivate movie consists of: A Preload slide A slide explaining the elements of the movie A welcome or introductory slide Text slides providing background information and details Screen shot slides A summary slide

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? A Preload slide A preload screen displays a message/graphic instructing the user that the movie is loading into their browser. For example, “Please wait, loading movie.” Captivate has a default preload screen that appears in the output. However, you can customize this screen to select a different preload screen if you prefer. A loading screen is beneficial for the following reasons: The more complex the first slide is, the longer the it takes to load and display. If movies are viewable worldwide and some countries may not have the most up-to-date internet services available.

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? A slide explaining the conventions of the movie Include a slide that explains the elements used throughout the movie that the audience should be aware of in order to successfully view and navigate the movie. For example, if a movie does or doesn’t contain audio, state that. Explain how objects are used and a description of the playback control.

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? A welcome or introductory slide The purpose of an introductory slide is to introduce the movie concept to the audience and to grab their attention so that they proceed to watch the entire movie.

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? Text slides providing background information and details The amount of text in a slide will impact the time that you allow for the display of that slide. Therefore, keep text slides concise. PowerPoint slides may be imported as text slides or a transparent caption can be created to use as a text slide.

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? Screen shot slides Create a storyboard or plan for creating your movie to ensure you understand exactly what you need to capture. As you record the movie, be sure to capture all of the screen shots necessary to completely demonstrate the concept or procedure. Once you complete the recording, it is often difficult to add additional slides without it being apparent. This sometimes causes a “jump” or non-continuous flow. Any additional slides recorded must be the same size as the originally captured screens.

What are Basic Contents of a Captivate Movie? A summary slide Should summarize the lesson objectives completed by the movie’s content. Provide directions for exiting the movie.

What are the Output Options? By simply clicking on three check boxes options, Captivate will automatically generate all three movies: Demonstrations Simulation Assessment

How Can You Customizing Captivate? Customizing demonstration captions – timing, color, etc. Customizing simulation prompts Adding images Including audio Importing files, including power point Creating interactive menus Inserting interactive text Developers will always need to edit and enhance their projects using some or all of the following:

What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie? Prepare - the application being recorded including Software Demo / Simulations / Assessment Record Edit Publish

Prepare Access application you wish to record Open files Set up the application environment Plan the demonstration You can use scripts, storyboards, or any other organizational materials you prefer. What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie?

Record - Choose a Project Type based on your learning objective: Software Simulation –This option captures the computer screen and is best suited for software simulations and demonstrations. Scenario Simulation – These projects are best suited for scenario and interaction based training like role-play, sales and management training. Miscellaneous Project Options – This option is used for Blank Shells, Images, Import from PowerPoint, or create from project templates What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie?

Record - Chose your recording options within that type of project. Software simulations options are as follows: Application - Record all action within a specified application. Ex. If you want to create a project about how to open a document in Microsoft Word Custom size - This option is useful if you must record a project at a certain size so that it can fit on a web page or within a help system. Full screen - This is a good option to use if you have to record actions in several different applications within one Adobe Captivate project. What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie?

Record - Chose your recording options within that type of project. Scenario Simulation recording options are as follows: Project Wizard - Wizard which walks you through all of the steps for a project. Create new simulation from a template - Create a new scenario simulation based on a template that you select. What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie?

Record - Chose your recording options within that type of project. Miscellaneous Project recording options are as follows: Blank project - This option is useful if you are creating a "shell" project and then importing other slides for the content. Image project - This is a good option to use if you are creating a project that you want to display like a slide show of images. Import from Microsoft PowerPoint - This option is used to create a project based on slides you import from a Microsoft PowerPoint project. Create project from template – This option is used to create a project using a previously saved template. What are the basics steps to create a Captivate movie?

Record - Choose your recording WINDOW options Select learning mode option in the Recording Dialog Box Demonstration - Automatically include captions, mouse movement etc. Assessment Simulation - Automatically include click boxes with a failure caption in the auto-recorded project.
