Content 1. Entrance Procedure 2. ESL Program 3. RMHS English Courses and In-class Support for ESL students 4. Exit Procedure

1. Entrance Procedure Any immigrant student who comes from a country where they do not speak English as their native language is subject to take The Mac II, an English Language Proficiency Test. The Mac II test assesses the student’s proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the English language. There are minimum cut points for each grade level, and decisions regarding the placement of the student will be made based on the student’s test results.

2. ESL Program The ESL program improves students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities in English. At the same time, the ESL program focuses on helping students understand concept, terminology, and academic vocabulary words of content area subjects.

The ESL program utilizes various technology to help students to learn English pronunciation, speaking, listening and grammar at the students’ own pace and English level.

ESL students expand their speaking/listening skills through oral presentations, class discussions, and listening comprehension exercise. Emphasis is on transferring their skills to the subject area classroom and to align ESL instruction to the common core standards.

ESL is a required English course. All students must take either mainstream English course or ESL course to satisfy the English course requirement for graduation.

3. RMHS English Courses and In- class Support for ESL students Most of the ESL students take at least one more English class in addition to the ESL. The ESL teacher visit the mainstream classes(World History, US history I & II, Earth Science, and biology, etc) to ensure that ESL students understand the course content and achieve their goals successfully in each class.

4. Exit Procedure All ESL students attending New Jersey public schools are to take ACCESS for ELLs in March or April every year. In this English language proficiency assessment, five content areas, which are social and instructional language, English language arts, math, science, and social studies are evaluated within each of the four language domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. There are six proficiency levels, and 4.5 out of 6.0 is the minimum cut points in order to exit from the ESL program.
