 Early Spanish art was strictly regulated by the Crown and the Church.  The Church needed paintings done for cathedrals and other religious reasons.  The Crown on the other hand needed painters and other artists for the many portraits that they wanted of the Royal Family.  These paintings and other forms of art can be described as creatively limited due to the demands made by the Crown and the Church. CHARACTERISTICS

 However, by the 17 th century Spanish art took an entirely new direction and became much more creative and free.  A good example of this can be seen by the use of impressionism being used by Spanish artists. What is impressionism? CHARACTERISTICS
