McGregors Theory X and Y What style of leadership will a manager adopt? According to McGregor this will depend on the managers attitude towards his workers. Are workers viewed as creative and willing to accept responsibility (Theory Y) or as lazy and trying to avoid work (Theory X)

NB There is only one type of worker, but two types of management views Describe how a theory x manager would approach his workers? – Strong control – Close supervision – Little or no delegation See table 8.3 p148

Homework Describe the view that democratic leadership is the best leadership style (12m) Tip – there is no one best style – See 148

How should a manager treat an informal leader in his organisation? Quick plan – All organisations have one – Definition – What can they offer? Experience, personality, special knowledge Do not ignore them, harness their influence Try to align their goals with the goal of the organisation

Emotional intelligence Managers that are emotionally intelligent will have high levels of – Self awareness – Self management – Social awareness – Social skills Goleman’s theory suggests that if managers can better understand their own emotions and have empathy toward their subordinates then better business performance can be achieved.

Goleman argues that to be an effective leader emotional intelligence is more important than traditional academic intelligence or IQ. Better leaders – with good social skills on can better persuade, negotiate and lead.
