8 The manager encourages the workforce to join in the decision making process. They discuss issues, delegate responsibility and listen to advice. 10 Autocratic Paternalistic Democratic Put the candidates on the leadership style scale below. You have five candidates to consider: Hitler, David Cameron, Simon Cowell, David Brent & Obama You have three styles to consider: Autocratic, Paternalistic & Democratic.

11 Theory X Managers tend to distrust their subordinates, as they believe that employees dislike work and will avoid it if they can. Employees prefer to be directed and need to be controlled. Employees are lazy people and dislike responsibilities. Theory X management would be inclined to adopt an autocratic leadership style.

12 Theory Y Management trusts employees and believes that they should be given the opportunity to be involved in decision-making and also take greater responsibilities. Employees want to work hard and be creative. Management has high expectations of their employees, as they trust them and empower them to make some decisions. Theory Y managers will be inclined to adopt a democratic style of management.
